Elizabeth Pou
Are you in a situation that you may need to use a wheel chair? It's possible to have an accident that will confine you to a wheel chair for a temporary length of time or permanent length of time. My friend found herself in a similar situation. Rebecca had a terrible car accident that led to a broken leg. She had to make a choice to be on crutches or a wheel chair. She decided to use a wheel chair. She had to pick through a variety of wheel chairs. The best part is she was in the wheel chair for a short period of time and fully recovered from the accident. The best solution is to find the right wheel chair and learn how to use the chair.

Many people will have to strengthen their upper body muscles to push the wheel chair. A manual wheel chair will work for someone that has some upper body strength. There are light weight and heavy weight wheel chairs available on the market. Also, there are a line of wheel chairs for sports and outdoors use. There are some pros and cons to having a wheel chair.

Pros:

  1. A manual wheel chair is more affordable then an electric wheelchair or any other wheel chair.
  2. Manual is good for temporary or permanent use.
  3. It will keep the upper body in shape because the constant pushing of the wheel chair.
  4. The wheel chair is light weight and easy to transport.
  5. The manual wheel chair takes less money to repair and easy to maintain.

Cons:

  1. You will need upper body strength to push the wheel chair. If not, this could be a problem or the wrong chair.
  2. The wheel chair is harder to steer and don't have automatic mobility.
  3. There is a possibility that a helper will be needed for pushing you in the chair.

It would be a good idea to talk to a wheel chair salesman about your condition before making a purchase. The salesman's should be able to help with picking the right wheel chair. You should let the wheel chair salesman know if anyone will be helping to push the wheel chair and the length of time you will be in the chair. The alternative is buying a used chair depending on the length that you will be in the wheel chair. These are some of the pros and cons to consider when purchasing or owning a manual wheel chair.
