The Ox Yoke Inn in Amana, Iowa, offers German and American food. Growing up, visiting the Amana Colonies was a tradition for our family. My grandfather liked going to the villages so he could eat German food and listen to his native language. I never did acquire the taste for sauerkraut, but I keep going back to the Inn for everything it has to offer.

You Won't Leave Hungry

The Ox Yoke Inn offers German home-style food like wiener schnitzel, sauerkraut and smoked ham served with bottomless bowls of side dishes. If that doesn't interest you, you can grab a sandwich or something more American. If you happen to be a vegetarian, you can choose from a number of side dishes available. There is also a children's menu.

The Ox Yoke Inn is known for their lavish Champagne brunches. This brunch isn't just full of all the usual breakfast fare; it also has a three tiered dessert table.

Get a Taste of History

What makes this restaurant unique is its setting. This restaurant (at one time a house) was built in 1856. Not only does the Inn serve food, but it is also a gift shop and museum.

Over the years I cannot think of a time that we didn't have a great dining experience at the Ox Yoke Inn. The service is always prompt and friendly.

The meals are served family-style so all of the food is brought out at once in heaping plates and bowls. The prices are very reasonable for the amount of food that comes to your table. It is never disappointing and you know that you are getting a quality meal.

Reservations are not needed, but if you are planning on going to the Ox Yoke Inn on a holiday, you may want to call (800-233-3441) ahead and reserve your table. You can also make reservations online.

The Ox Yoke Inn is located at 4420-220th Trail in Amana, Iowa. Hours of operation during June - August are: Monday - Saturday : Lunch 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.; Dinner: 4 - 8:30 p.m. Brunch is served on Sunday 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.; Dinner 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. The hours do change with the seasons; make sure to check times before you make plans.

Thanks for the comments you two!

German food isn't my thing either, but it has always been what I was around.

I never liked sauerkraut, and I went vegetarian on them. I think it broke their hearts!
