The OXO Mango Slicer is best engineered and best looking tool in the field of specialty kitchen items. Few tasks are trickier than serving a fresh mango. The irregular shape of the mango pit makes the extraction process something like open heart surgery. With conventional knives, too much of the flesh and juice of the fruit is lost to imprecise cutting.
A gadget dedicated to the unique shape of the mango makes life much easier. It also makes serving mangoes more economical because there is less waste. The cutting device offered by OXO is designed specifically for this job. It has an elliptical centered blade that slides down around the pit, isolating it from the edible fruit. The result is two succulent halves of the mango, ready to eat.
The blade is embedded in a ring of the familiar OXO black and white rubber grip handles which are ergonomically comfortable. This slicer can be tossed in the dishwasher for easy clean up. But just take an extra few seconds to simply rinse it clean and dry it off. This will ensure a longer life for the gadget and protect the rubber handles from the extreme heat of the dishwasher drying cycle.
It can be used to core other fruits, such as apples and pears. However, it cuts away a bit too much of these types of fruit, demonstrating just how specifically it is customized for mangoes. Use a standard eight-section corer for your apples and pears.
One drawback is that this slicer appears to be available in one size only. Therefore, it works best with large mangoes. The smaller sized fruits tend to get short changed in the cutting process, leaving not much to eat. In such cases, there is the desire to gnaw away at the pit like corn on the cob.
This device retails in a range between $12 and $15. With mangoes available almost all year round now due to world wide growing and shipping, the cutter will pay for itself in no time. You might be able to find less expensive slicers, but make sure the handles are strong and the blades are securely attached to the outer ring. You don't want any mishaps are injury to your hands when working in the kitchen. Most chain outlets and large grocery stores carry products from the OXO line. You can certainly find this mango slicer in kitchen specialty stores such as Sur La Table.
