Oxygen: Great Ideas Are in the Air!

p. jonghani
So importantly as the breathing itself is also that WHAT we breathe: Oxygen. Since they discovered the multiple talents of the invisible 'elixir of life,' oxygen is full in line with the trend. Take a deep breath, you will be surprised what oxygen is able to do!

Oxygen cosmetics

While managers in Tokyo, New York and Frankfurt more and more often visit 'oxygen bars', models use the vital gas with pleasure for their beauty. As oxygen stimulates the metabolism - also that of the skin. Hence, cosmetics manufacturers more and more frequently bet on oxygen against wrinkles. Thereby, the air does not evaporate from the creams, it is enclosed in tiny capsules or is bound to herbal materials. Thus the oxygen penetrates directly into the skin and lets it look fresher and younger.

Oxygen refreshes even while drinking

Also in the area of soft drinks there is a new trend: Drinks, e.g. water with increased admixture of oxygen. Since our body does not absorb a lot of oxygen over the stomach, the benefit rather lies in the refreshment. After extensive sportive activities, e.g. jogging or exercising, water with added oxygen is still in line with the trend - beside fruity thirst quencher like energy drinks and juice tea mixtures.

Get new energy by the right breathing technique

Instead of drinking 'aerial water' you should bet even more on the right breathing method. Did you know, that not any kind of breathing provide our body equally with oxygen? Many people breathe too flat and too fast. Therefore, a way to use the oxygen of the air properly is the abdominal respiration. And it works this way: Take a deep breathe by the nose and imagine that the air moves like an energy stream into the belly. Then stop a moment and keep the breath. After this slowly exhale the air again by the mouth.

Oxygen - a great substance for cleaning

We associate oxygen with freshness, health and cleanness. And really, the gas can provide useful services for us also in the area of cleaning and household. There is an old technique that only few people know yet which is certainly still familiar to the older generation. Sheets, table cloth and shirts were spread out on a meadow in order to bleach the pieces of laundry and to get them fresh, clean and stain-free.

Nowadays, modern housewives and househusbands prefer to apply 'active oxygen'. This type of oxygen is very reactive, associates with the dirt within seconds and has a slightly bleaching and antiseptic effect. Thus, it is increasingly used in detergents and cleansers.

Oxygen in the modern medicine

Last but not least, oxygen is even used in the modern medicine. The so called 'Oxygen therapy' benefits the patient by increasing the supply of oxygen to the lungs. At the same time the accessibility of oxygen to the body tissues is improved. Suitable levels of oxygen are vital to support cell respiration.

In the Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) high levels of oxygen are applied to treat particular diseases. 'Oxygen first aid' specifically refers to the use of oxygen in a first aid setting. Oxygen helps patients with low blood oxygen levels and myocardial infarction. However, high blood and tissue levels of oxygen can be helpful or damaging, depending on circumstances.
