How many of you are sometimes in the same situation after a hard workout? You are feeling great after a strong workout, and you're looking for something to eat or drink. Previously, I would use a sports drink, however I would feel sore the next day and it made it hard to continue to do another workout.
Now that I am a little more experienced with my fitness and how nutrition works, I have learned that a 4:1 Carbohydrate to Protein Ratio is important to restore glycogen stores and more important the protein is needed to repair the muscles. In addition, for the maximum benefit of reducig muscle soreness and muscle repair, you need to consume this Ratio within 60 minutes of finishing the workout and for the best results within 15 minutes of finishing.
I use to remember just waiting to look through the pantry or refrigerator to make something to eat, or I would take a shower then rummage around. I thought I was giving my body some rest and relaxation. What I really needed was nutrition and little did I know that I was doing more harm to my body than good.
Chocolate milk has the 4:1 Ratio but it's mostly a simple carb and lacks the other vitamins and other muscle repair ingredients that my body needs.
My recovery formula that I enjoy is P90X Results and Recovery Formula. It has the 4:1 Carb to Protein Ratio, and includes Vitamins A, B, C and E and L-Arginine, L-Glutamine, and Creatine. The formula comes in Smooth Orange and it is great blending it with ice for a Creamsicle Smoothie. It comes in a 52.9oz Tub for 25 servings. The serving size is 2 sccops (60g) with 12oz of water. It also comes in single serve powder packets. Click here for the nutritional facts.
