Paalakai Bakery is one of the few bakeries on the north shore. It sounds like a weird name and yes it is a Hawaiian word. It is Pronounced Pa-ah-la-kai. It has been in its location for over 25 years. The bakery is a popular one among residents in the Waialua area, but has found fans as far as Honolulu on the other side of Oahu. Located in a residential area on Kaukonahua road, it is a main stopping point for Tourists heading into the North Shore from town.

The bakery has been getting run down because of a lack of funds and the slowing of business in the area but the pastries have not changed a bit. Many people I talk to often make a comment about the éclairs and puffys. These are flaky treats filled with cream and covered with chocolate. They also carry the traditional servings of donuts, brownies and danishes, but they also carry some other unique delights.

One of those happens to be donut holes. Talk about resourceful and using all of the donut. Why waste the punched part of a donut? And besides you can take them along as mini bite sized donut treats. They also carry sweet bread. You can get a whole loaf for just a few dollars. My all time favorite there are their turnovers. If you get a chance to, try the apricot turnover. Be sure to down it with chocolate milk that you can also get there and you will be in pastry heaven.

If pastries are not your thing, you can also try the ready made sandwiches. They prepare them and wrap them with a pickle on the side, so you can actually pick up breakfast as well as lunch. They also offer bagels and cream cheese if you are trying the healthy route.

Ok, so here is the tip of the day portion of this article. Near the evenings before they close up which is pretty early considering they are shut down before 8:00 pm, in an effort to get rid of the day's excess they offer a half off deal. That means if you get there around 6:00 pm, you can get all of your pastries for half what you would have paid in the morning. They usually are fine for the next few days so you can actually get them half off in the evening and take them with you the following day. Visit them and try the best éclairs and puffys on the island.
