If you are a fan of the show "Lost" then you have more than likely seen this market. However, besides its cameo appearances on the famous show, it also has a fan base for other reasons. Many locals of the area and residents throughout the state flock to this little market on the North Shore of Oahu for its famous fried chicken.

For just a few dollars you can get a piece of fried chicken and rice. The chicken itself is amazing and there is really no comparison. The one thing that you will notice right away is the fact that it is not oily. If you love fried chicken, but your stomach does not do well with oily foods then this could be your answer.

The other thing that I noticed right away is that the batter is not overwhelming. Many other fried chicken places I have been to have used way too much breading and batter. And when you finally got to the chicken it was actually much smaller, not the case here. The other thing that I like is the fact that they strip off the chicken fat. Taking this kind of care and preparation makes Paalakai Market my favorite place to go when I am craving fried chicken.

While you are there you can also check out the fresh seafood sides that they have. You can get raw fish or what is better known as sashimi to go along with your fried chicken or try some of the other things they have there. You can also try one of their famous spam musubis. A spam musubi is basically a slice of friend spam on a block of rice, drizzled with teriyaki sauce and wrapped in a sheet of nori or seaweed. If you have never had one I suggest you try it.

The parking lot has ample parking space, but if it is filled up you may have to park across the street. It can get pretty crowded in the morning hours as people are picking up food and headed on out to work. And the great part when you are done is you can walk right over and get some desert at the bakery next door. The treats there are pretty popular and I have talked to many a people that have traveled all the way from Honolulu just for their popular puffy pastries.

If you are ever on the North Shore of Oahu and get a craving for fried chicken or just want to check out if the "Lost" crew is filming there, then check out Paalakai Market, you won't regret it.
