As if the eruption of Pacaya Volcano erupting isn't enough, Guatemala is also experiencing a tropical storm and 2 earthquakes all at the same time. Water, ash and stones have been raining down on areas inside and close to Guatemala City. Towns are being evacuated in some parts. The government has urged people not to go outside of their homes unless absolutely necessary.
The falling ash is causing traffic accidents, at this writing 30 traffic accidents have been reported due to driving on ash filled roads. Ash is also falling in Amatitán, San Francisco of Sales, Calderas, Los Pocitos and San Vicente Pacaya. 3 children have been reported missing and a TV reporter was found dead. The TV reporter, Anibal Arcila, was killed from falling debris from the Pacaya volcano.
The President of Guatemala has declared a state of calamity. He has enacted a state of disaster for at least the next 15 days. The Pacaya volcano continues to have increased eruptive activity.
Guatemala is no stranger to volcanoes. They have 8 active ones. The Pacaya volcano is a tourist attraction. Many people go there and walk along the lava flows that were created by volcanic eruptions in 1989 and 1991. There are hiking trails around the volcano. Pacaya volcano has been erupting off and on since 1966.
Pacaya and Eyjafjallajökull are not the only "active" volcanoes in the world. There are around 1,500 volcanoes that are considered active in the world. If a volcano has erpted in the last 10,000 years, it is considered to be active. The Pacific Ring of Fire includes over 75% of the world's volcanoes. These are also some of the most active volcanoes in the world.

Post a CommentI just read about the huge sinkhole in Guatemala City, and having published a report came across your brilliant article here. The link to the pictures of Pacaya shows an amazing photograph of the eruption, and I had not seen anything of this in the UK, neither the storm or the earthquakes or eruption having been reported (to my knowledge) until today. I was in Guatemala City 5 times in the 80's/90's and it's an amazing country. I feel so sorry for the people there.
Oh my gosh! You did a terrific job on reporting this.

Hope this helps pcv. And stay safe!
I thought there were only 3 active volcanoes in Guatemala--Pacaya, Fuego and Santiaguito. What are the others? Im a current Peace Corps Volunteer living in Guatemala, and it is storming like crazy here!
Perhaps it is the end of the world. One wonders with all that is happening.
God is mad! There is just too much hate in this world he created!
Wow. That's horrible. Makes you think though. What is going on?
This is an incredible work Sherry. I hope this reaches deep into many human hearts of those who don't know Christ yet and make them read Matt. 24. These, to me, are signs of the end of the age. It is like Paul says that the whole creation (earth) groans in eager expectation at the earnest anticipation of the sons and daughters of God who will soon be revealed. Admit your lostness and confess it, Believe in Jesus being raised from the dead and dying for you, and Confess Him as Lord and Savior. It IS as easy as ABC. Fantastic reporting Sherry. It makes me wonder just how long we have till Christ's return. I pray that all who read this will think about this. Not one of us have a guarantee that tomorrow will come. God bless this article & its work in conjuction with the Holy Spirt, in Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.
Good accounting of this.
Scary news.
