First, decide whether or not you want to work with movers. Movers can be expensive, but if you have a lot of heavy furniture, they can be worth it. You can call companies to ask for an estimate.
Next, you need boxes. You can purchase boxes, but you can also find them at copy shops or liquor stores - just go in and ask for any spares. Don't forget to ask friends, as well. At any rate, make sure the boxes you use are sturdy and that you have good packing tape. There's no sense in packing a box carefully if it falls apart and dumps the contents on your feet the first time you pick it up.
Before you pack a single box, though, go through all of your clothing and other belongings and sort out the things you no longer use. If you haven't worn something in a year or it doesn't fit, donate it so that someone less fortunate can use it. Clothing does no one any good if it's locked away in your closet not being used. If you have books, video games, movies, or CDs that you no longer enjoy, you can sell them online or at a store that buys used books and music. This way, you can earn a little bit of extra money and save yourself the trouble of hauling things you no longer use to a new house where they'll only take up space.
After you've gotten rid of everything that you no longer use, then you can get ready to begin the work of packing. Pack room by room, so that you don't get overwhelmed. As well, you'll likely unpack items from one room into your new equivalent - bedroom to bedroom, kitchen to kitchen. This way you won't have to haul things from one central area into every room in your new house.
Mark each box clearly with the room it needs to go into and a number. Why a number? So you can use either a spreadsheet or simply a notebook to keep track of your boxes and their contents. When you close a box, make a note of what it contained. That way, when you're in your new house and need to know exactly where your spare towels or cleaning supplies are, for example, you can look in your book or your printed spreadsheet and know exactly which box to open, instead of searching fruitlessly through several boxes and wasting time.
When you're packing boxes, take the time to pick up the box occasionally to make sure it's not too heavy. Pack small, dense things like books or DVDs in smaller boxes. Clothing and linens can go in bigger boxes as they tend to be lighter. This way, you can use the space in boxes but have a lower chance of being injured. If you have problems with your back, consider using a back brace.
Finally, pack a box that includes necessities like a roll of toilet paper, tools, any medications your family or pets might need, and a phone number to a nearby pizza delivery place. Open this box first and you'll feel prepared and ready to unpack.
If you follow these tips, you should soon be ready to move with a minimum of stress. Your unpacking will be easier than you ever expected, and you will be settled in your new place before you know it.
