Packing for Your Vacation: How to Avoid High Airline Baggage Fees

Tips for Reducing Airline Luggage Fees

Jennifer Foote
Are you in the process of preparing for your upcoming vacation? If you are, do you need multiple suitcases? If so, did you know that you may be charged an extra fee? Many airlines are now charging as much as $50 roundtrip for a second bag of checked luggage. In fact, some are now charging travelers for that first bag. With the cost of air travel already high, this may be an expense that you just cannot afford.

When looking at all needed vacation supplies, you may automatically assume there is no way to fit everything in one bag. Yes, you may be right, but there is not harm in trying to avoid airline baggage fees. In fact, doing so may be easier than you originally thought. For a few helpful tips, please continue reading on.

Check the Weather Forecast

Before leaving, be sure to check the anticipated weather forecast. You should do so the day before you leave, as this forecast will be the most accurate. By keeping tabs on the weather, you know what you really need to pack. Yes, you will want to be prepared for the unexpected, but you can also benefit from using your best judgment. If the weather forecast calls for warm sunny weather, don't pack your suitcase full of sweaters or rain gear.

Make Use of Your Carry-On Bag

If you do not already have a carry-on bag, be sure to get one. In the past, carry-on bags were used to gain access to necessities. Now, they can be used to help reduce your airline fees. All airlines have restrictions concerning carry-on bags, namely their size. Be sure to familiarize yourself with these restrictions ahead of time and follow them. With that said, pack your carry-on bag as full as possible. When you do so, it may help to eliminate those pesky airline luggage fees.

Invest in Space Saving Bags

It is also a wise idea to invest in a box of Space Bags or another similar brand. These space saving bags can do wonders for creating extra space in your suitcase. They can even be used for your carry-on bag. Look for those designed for travel, as no vacuum suction is needed to consolidate your clothing. When used, you may be surprised just how much extra space you have in your suitcase or carry-on bag.

Be Careful with Souvenirs

Where many travelers run into trouble is with extra space needed for souvenirs. Yes, you will want to bring home mementos of your trip, but be cautious of those extra airline baggage fees. If you need an extra suitcase, you may be charged up to $25 for your flight home. Remember space saving bags, even if you must purchase them just for the ride home. They can reduce the space in your luggage, making more room for souvenirs. As last resorts, consider shipping your souvenirs home or buying only those that are small in size.

Consolidate with Family

If you are traveling with your family, consider consolidating luggage. As much as your son or daughter may like to have their own suitcase, is it full? If not, consolidate your luggage as much as possible to eliminate suitcases with too much empty space. This approach is best taken with family members, as you should know what is packed already. This reduces you from liability that you may face with when sharing a bag with an "acquaintance."

As highlighted above, there are a number of ways that you can avoid the airline luggage fees that many are starting to charge. Your airline tickets alone can be costly. That is why you are urged to avoid paying any extra fees, unless you have to.

I think they purposefully set the fee low enough that mailing items ahead isn't cost effective but yet it is high enough to make you wonder. I think most people will pay the fee so they can have their personal items.
