Pacquiao Demolishes Hatton in the Second Round and Finally Shuts Up Mayweather

PacMan's Speed and Power Proved to Be Too Much for Ricky Hatton

Gerald McConway
The two fighters approached the ring in a totally different mindset. Hatton was all business and never cracked a smile. When it was Pacquiao's turn to enter the ring, there was a smirk on his face that seemed to tell everyone that he knew exactly how the evening was going to play out. In less than 15 minutes, that feeling would prove to be true.

Round 1: The round started off pretty slowly, but that was rectified about a minute later. PacMan was already proving to be way too quick for Hatton and started landing brutal body shots. He then came over the top and put Hatton down as he caught him square on the chin with a right hook. Hatton managed to get up, but he was already bloody and obviously hurt. He survived for all of 40 seconds before Pacquiao caught him again with a left and put him down for the second time in the round. Hatton once again got to his feet and managed to survive the last few seconds of the round.

Round 2: I'm not sure what was in Hatton's water in his corner, but he came out on fire in the second round. He landed a shot early that rocked Pacquiao, but PacMan immediately shook it off and then let Hatton know that was the last time that he was going to be hit like that. With about 1:30 left in the round, they stood toe to toe in the middle of the ring and Pacquiao began to land shot after shot. They were obviously taking their toll and it seemed as though it was only a matter of time before Hatton would succumb to the beating that Pacquiao was delivering.

That moment came less than a minute later as Pacquiao landed a brutal left hook square on the chin of Hatton that put him to the canvas for good at 2:59 of the second round. He lay there motionless and the fight was obviously over. There was immediate concern for Hatton as he was completely out in the middle of the ring. As the trainers and doctors looked after him, he was nothing more than a dazed and limp body in their hands. Seconds turned into minutes and the minutes seemed to last forever. After what seemed like an eternity, Hatton was able to get back to hit feet and while he was still dazed, he seemed to be okay. This will probably prove to be his last fight.

In the midst of all this was the jubilation from the Pacquiao camp. Pacquiao is clearly the best pound for pound for fighter in the world. He has come into his own in a big way over the last couple of years and will definitely be the cash register for boxing over the next few years.

You have to wonder how much of Mayweather's talking affected the outcome of this fight. It became clear in the interview afterwards that all of his chatter proved to be the motivation behind the absolute assault that Pacquiao laid on Hatton. Verbal attack after verbal attack was sent at both Pacquiao and more so at his trainer Freddy Roach. It is easy to throw stones and instigate a battle when you are not the man in the ring taking the punishment.

Now the question is who will be next for Pacquiao? There is already talk of Mayweather Jr. being the next possible opponent if he manages to win his initial comeback fight. Regardless of who the opponent is though, he would be wise to tell his trainer to keep his mouth shut and concentrate on preparing him for the fight. That approach did not work out too well for the last guy.

Hatton is definitely on the downslide of his career now, and always had a problem with speedsters anyway.

Mr. gayweather should start to train his son gayweather for him to anticifate the punch of manny. i heard on the interview last year that he will come out for his retirement if manny defeat hatton. its up to gayweather if he will come out to his parlor... now that hatton has been defeated.

It was a pretty impressive performance and if it is possible, I think he got quicker since the DeLaHoya fight. I gave up on boxing a long time ago, but he has gotten me interested again in a big way. The combination of power and speed that he offers is something that few fighters are going to be able to handle while he is in his prime. We could be looking at a good four or five years of total dominance. There are some great boxers coming up at lower weight classes that may be the heir apparent, but I think it will be long time before he gives up that belt.

Pacquiao was as impressive as ever and proved that he is pound for pound, the best boxer in the world. Pacquiao vs. Mayweather must happen now. If anything, I think Mayweather will talk even more.
