Pacquiao Vs. Mayweather Comes to a Screeching Halt, Who's to Blame?

The Floyd Mayweather Vs. Manny Pacquiao Fight is All but Finished

Jake Emen
The depressing realization that the Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather fight is kaput is finally settling over the boxing community. As has been reported by Dan Rafael at ESPN and a variety of other news outlets, it seems that Pacquiao will now be slated to face welterweight contender Joshua Clottey while Mayweather is working on lining up an opponent for himself.

Both fighters are still planning on using the proposed March 13 date, which means that instead of battling it out in the ring they will be battling it out on the balance sheets to see who draws more pay-per-view sales and possibly gains an upper hand in further negotiations should the fight ever rematerialize. Yes, it's likely that after having our strings pulled for the better part of two months, that a fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao could still rise to the surface in September of this year.

For his part, potential Mayweather opponents have been rumored as Kermit Cintron and Paulie Malignaggi, although a handful of other fighters have been named as well. Mayweather's fight will still likely take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, while Pacquiao will take a trip down to the Palace in Dallas to fight in Jerry Jones's new Cowboys Stadium.

After all of the back and forth drama, the media ploys and what ultimately amounts to an epic failure on the part of all sides, one question remains in the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight cancellation fiasco.

Who Should Get the Blame for the Cancellation of Pacquiao vs. Mayweather?

Lots of people deserve a share of the blame for Pacquiao vs. Mayweather not getting made. Starting with those who deserve the most...

Bob Arum: Yes, he of, "Yesterday I lied, today I'm telling the truth," fame. Throughout the entire affair Pacquiao's promoter was more interested in taking shots at Floyd Mayweather and his camp, and trying to work over the media then to work out a deal. As Golden Boy representative Richard Schaefer repeatedly told media outlets that the fight could still get done and only small issues needed to be ironed out, Arum jumped at every opportunity to say the fight was dead.

Arum formerly promoted Mayweather, until their relationship turned sour and Mayweather bought his way out of the contract. Arum's stubborn refusal to work amiably with Mayweather when it would have benefited everyone involved was one of the driving factors of the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight being tanked.

Manny Pacquiao: Boxers are superstitious people. That's why they have such rigid routines and it forms the basis of some of their courage to step into the ring and exchange thunderous shots to the face with one another. However, Pacquiao's superstitious belief that having his blood drawn would make him weak and his resulting refusal to adhere to the demands of Mayweather was the final boulder that could not be moved out of the way for the mega-fight to get made. Ultimately, if you are a clean fighter, why wouldn't you agree to have your blood taken for $50 million?

Floyd Mayweather: Accusing Pacquiao of taking steroids was a win-win media ploy for Mayweather... except if Pacquiao retaliated by refusing to take the tests and instead filing a lawsuit, which he did. For his part, Mayweather did compromise on many of the details of the bout, however at the end of the day his stance on Olympic drug testing instead of the typical commission-based tests gets the "he never wanted the fight anyway" tag thrown back in his face.

Fighting a junior welterweight contender such as Paulie Malignaggi while Pacquiao fights a welterweight contender would be further embarrassment. Not to mention, how can a fighter with the self-given nickname "Money", not cease his demand making, and let his fists do the talking for an absurdly rich payday?

Richard Schaefer: Despite being far less culpable than Arum, Schaefer could have come up with more creative negotiating strategies to get the fight made. Mayweather's camp agreed to a ludicrous $10 million fee for coming in overweight. Schaefer could have compromised on the blood testing demands of Mayweather and came back with a $10 million penalty for any pre or post fight positive test results.

There's more blame to go around too. Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach for his media sensationalism and constant interviews one minute approving the bout and the next minute deriding it; Mayweather's father Floyd Mayweather Sr. for getting the Pacquiao steroid allegations started; fans, promoters and networks for aimlessly allowing the charade to play itself out and on down the line.

Somebody, anybody, needed to step up - or suck it up - and do something to save this bout. Nobody did, and it's truly an atrocity for everybody involved. Long, drawn out and venomous negotiations are a common occurrence for major boxing contests, but traditionally, the fight always got made.

The fact that this one didn't is a monumental catastrophe for all parties involved. Maybe the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao bout happens in September. Maybe it doesn't. Maybe one of the two guys loses their interim bouts on March 13 and all of the glam and glitz falls off the contest. At this point though, who cares?

If you look at the facts and I know Pactards or Mayweather haters aka black folks haters don't like to acknowledge the facts. The fact is this fight didn't happen because of a boxers refusal to take a drug test. The only people who don't like drug test are DRUG USERS. huh? Now what! The facts hurt, huh?! Pacquiao is America's Great White Hope or what I seen on the cover of Time Magazine Asia he is just The Great Hope. Racist white washed Filippinos say the N word like they some how not blacks themselves. Here goes the facts again. Hey Filippinos are actual descendents of the Negritos who still inhabit the Philippinos til this day. Yes. All of you guys are some N's too. More like Mulattos. Half Negrito/Half Spaniard. Half Mayweather/Half Gasol. Hurts don't it?! Plus your country is a joke to the world especially America who controls your control, keeps your country in shambles and keeps Military Bases and Forts on your soil so they can have sex with you women.

Mayweather and the other escaped slaves in his posse need to stop running like scared niggers.

Floyd Mayweather should be blamed. He doesn't want to fight Manny...not yet anyways. A conventional ploy for a frightened fighter is to stall...stall for his opponent's skills or interest to fade. Mayweather's name shouldn't even be uttered in the same circles as today's best fighters let alone all time greats! True champions fight all comers; they don't duck them and Floyd ducks them all. IMO, Sergio Martinez might be able to whip this pretender. Manny would knock him out early.

mayflower is a wimp pacman will beat u like he beat all the other brothers and mexicans and dont forget the white man

  • Fight Dr.1/4/2011

Manny is a great fighter, but anyone who thinks he would beat Mayweather is delusional. Mayweather is the one fighter who would punch Pac-mans lights out.I don't like Floyd as a person, but as a fighter he's the winner of a Pac-Man/Mayweather match.Pac-Mans camp is the one running.

Please tell me when Pacquiao agreed to the blood testing?

  • GBQ6612/11/2010

Pacman has already agreed to the bloodtesting even though it isnt required by the boxing authorities - yet Mayweather hasnt stepped up to the plate. So who's at fault now?

neither pac or floyd need each other they make 6,000 interest on i million per month pac needs to take test the day of fight and floyd needs to quit wresling and clinching ,holding ,hitting on break twice with gotti, manny fights clean but i think hes hidding somthing about test he sure seems to have a lot of stemnia these past few years he ha strength but really doesnt have the one punch ko power it would be a great fight if all officials promoters and refs abide in the queensberry rules and manny take test not 14 days before as his camp said seems to me that what ever hes taking needs within 14 days or maybe 30 days to take effect to help him . the truth will come out it always does.iam not for either of these guys i just would like to see a good fight where each fighter puts forth their skill. for example dotti/ward,mosley/margaritta,leonard/hearns. as for leonard in that figjht he fought very good but he helled hagler all of the fight,i didnt care for hagler but he was a clean fight

  • robert of mt12/5/2010

manny fights like mayweather hit and run why didnt he take test my son takes shots at 2 yrs for preschool. 30 days mw camp 14 days manny camp? take the test and fight, that wouldnt be much of a fight mayweather will hold him down forearm him and push to win as he did to mosley 12 times watch the fight again or study in slow mo. look what lopez did to r marquez about 42 times holding him down how about spitting out mouthpiece abbiding time all you sportscasters promoters and devout fans need to read and understand the queensberry rules of boxing and then determind who are the best fighters out there the rules say no wresteling, clinching, holding you refs need to adhere to these rules and give us fans better fights. mannys a good fighter mosleys excellent, both marquez brothers are great any fighter thats fair and clean is great and respected anyone that gets in the ring once and is knocked out is great i been there. boxing needs to be cleaned up rules inforced like football, basketbal

You want a new topic that's not recycled? Write on the status of the case filed by Pacman against Mayweather. Your facts are sorely lacking especially when it puts Mayweather in a bad light. You are sounding more like his publicist than a true sports analyst or journalist. One thing though I can believe, a pathetic coward is one who hits the mother of his own child and allowing it to be witnessed by the kid. That's truly abyssmal! Anyone who can respect or believe that he has any integrity left should have his mind examined. Follow Mayweather's public scandals and you will see his true character. THe day he makes amends to this woman and his kid, is the time when I will believe his words and even cheer for him. Otherwise, he is a shame to the boxing world!
