First, plan ahead to be sure that all family members will be available and that paddle boats will be open for use on that day. After school is a great time for this activity, as the park might be near the family home or on the way home from school or work. If the family enjoys the activity, it can become a regular thing.
Check to see whether safety flotation devices will be available for each person, depending on their age and size. Also, check to see what ages are permitted in the boats and whether there is enough equipment and there are enough boats for everyone to participate. Also, proper boating shoes are a must, even for the kids. Look for slip-proof boat shoes that are comfortable, waterproof, durable, and have a good amount of traction.
Some paddle boats only hold one or two people, while others hold more. If not enough resources are available, either find a place where everything is available or purchase your own. Most paddle boat lakes will allow use of your own equipment with registration.
Make sure everyone who will need to help to paddle the boat is in the right physical condition to do so. Check with a doctor to be sure, just like when starting or stopping any physical regimen. Of course, younger kids may just be going along for the ride. But depending on age and abilities, some will want to help guide the paddle boats.
If you've never used a paddle boat before, think of pedaling a bike with a really tight chain. It's a similar motion, but not quite as smooth as pedaling a bicycle. If your family enjoys the activity, you might consider purchasing your own paddle boat or canoe to use at a beach or larger lake, where permitted.

Post a CommentPaddle boats are fun! The lifeboat tip is right on target, as a teenager, I fell in murky water and didn't realize I could stand in the water, it was very terrifying and gave my friends a good laugh!
