Page Views- Your Interest Earned

Loraine Alkire
I was wondering how many of you think of your page views as interest earning savings? Since time is money I'm taking the time to write this little article about my current perspective on page views. As a side note: I'm avoiding writing an article on 'How to Give Yourself a High Colonic'; even though the pay is great, I just haven't worked up the proper enthusiasm for it.

So naturally, when I'm stuck like this, and not wanting to work or at least work on the task at hand, I start looking at what's in my Pay-pal account, reading my emails, checking to see if anyone has commented on what an absolutely amazing writer I am, pouring a cup of coffee, calling a friend and looking to see if the page views have been updated yet.

Hip-hip hurray the page views were updated today and I'm now well over a 1500 page views. I'm not sure if this is good or bad considering I've been here a whole month but I'll take it. And while my page view earnings may not be able to buy me a Starbuck's latte yet; I'm pretty sure I'm a shoe in for a nice glazed Dunkin's Donut.

But I think I'll just hold on to all this cash. What have I been doing but enjoying a cup of coffee in the comfort of my own home wearing my pajamas and socks that don't match? (Yes we writers really can do that- huge perk!) No it's not Merrill-Lynch or Citigroup and thank goodness it's not, I'm actually earning here with no investment but my time, not bad all things considered.

I'm not always happy about which articles seem to get the most page views, because they aren't always the ones I think YOU the reader should really enjoy. But the benefit of seeing my page views is the same as looking at my stock portfolio. There are the great companies with new technology that I thought would make millions and then the boring drivel that I thought wouldn't earn a dime, usually I'm wrong on both counts. And so it goes with page views. I get to adjust my writing style (or not) to capitalize on the articles that earn; which brings me back to writing, How to Give Yourself a High Colonic. To me it's boring drivel that doesn't even compare to my wonderful 'Rumor of Her Humor' column. But it's the one that pays the bills ... so off I go to tell the world where to shove it, literally.

Maybe this is just because I grew up with video games for baby sitters, but I'm obsessed about my page views not so much for the money, but because I simply MUST see my little purple planet level up. Something about the idea of rising through the ranks and becoming an inter-stellar conqueror just does it for me.

Well, if they aren't is because they get so many they take it for granted or they don't care about the money or the exposure. I'm more obsessed with money... and yes, the publication that I wrote the colonic article on payed much more... it was print so can't post here.

Fun read. Is everyone at AC obsessed with page views? I know I am!

Yes, Loraine, it is weird what will get the most page viewers. And what amazed me is back when we were given stars (one to five with five being best) we weren't given stars on our writing ability but on how well people liked on what you had to say about the subject. If people didn't like what you said you'd find that article would earn you one star--no matter how well written. And if people liked what you wrote about a subject you'd get five stars--no matter how poorly written it was.

And what did the world say? Who is paying big bucks (or any) for high colonic articles?

I know exactly how you feel...
