Pain Is

Anita Grace Simpson
Pain is hope rekindled with tears
Searing jolts of memory
Clawing from the darkest recesses
Wailing desperation in the night
Pain sucks out love
And pastes a whipped-cream smile
On cardboard hearts
It burns unseen, creates nothing
Not even ashes in its wake.
Pain is hearing kind words
That fall like glowing embers
On my scarred and tender heart.
Pain and joy entwine
When I am touched
By gentle, loving beings
Who've come to save my soul.
Pain is birth and death.
Pain is life.
