Pain You Can't See

Nancie Norton
Sometimes you can see pain
On one's face or in their eyes
But often there are people
In more pain than you realize

Some people give up their life to pain
They surrender whatever action they have left
Which in turn makes their lives so much harder
They stop being able to do things for themselves

Those are the ones you feel sorry for
You think, " their pain must be so much worse"
Than that person, with the smile on their face
Who tries to stay active or work.

You never really know
What other people are feeling inside
Some don't want to complain in front of you
To do so, strikes a blow to their pride.

People react to chronic pain
In so many different ways
It seems that those who give in to their pain
Spend a lot of lonely days

Often pain free people are skeptical
They react to pain complaints with disbelief
Most people can't even fathom
The kind of pain that gives no relief

I don't know how we could go about changing this
It's a subject, few people want to discuss
I guess it makes some uncomfortable
To be reminded that there are people like us

Don't you know that I would trade this constant pain
For the normal life I used to live?
When my days were always busy
And I had so much more to give.

You may think I want your sympathy
But that is not the case
If that was what I wanted
I'd let you see it on my face

What a shame we can't have
A meeting of the minds
You know, a kind of understanding
About this pain, of a different kind

This is something, I had to share with you
Even though the words were hard to say
It's worth a little embarassment
If I've helped you to see pain, In a more tolerant way.
