Pain Relieving Exercise - Step #1
Sit with the back straight and with one heel pressed against the perineum. The other leg should be rested upon the opposite leg, resembling the half-lotus position or what we sometimes call Indian-style.
Pain Relieving Exercise - Step #2
If the pain is in the right side of the back, shoulders or neck, let your right arm lie on your thighs. If the pain is on the left side of the back, shoulders or neck, let your left arm lie on your thighs.
Pain Relieving Exercise - Step #3
Extend your opposite hand (left for pain in the right side and right for pain in the left side) in front of you. Keep your fingers straight together and pointed.
Pain Relieving Exercise - Step #4
Rest your eyes on the fingers of your outstretched hand and begin to move your hand slowly up and to the same side (right for the right hand and left for the left hand). Raise the hand as high as you can and breathe normally.
Pain Relieving Exercise - Step #5
Lift your hand to it's original starting position. Do this slowly while focusing on keeping your breathing even. Keep your eyes resting on your fingers at all times.
Pain Relieving Exercise - Step #6
Repeat the steps above for the pain relieving exercise a total of seven times. If the pain is severe, you may repeat the set of seven as many times as you are comfortable with. This will effectively relieve the pain in the upper back, neck and/or shoulders.
If you are experiencing pain in both sides of the upper back, neck and/or shoulders, repeat the pain relieving exercise while alternating sides until the pain has subsided.
Also, it's important that you keep your attention on the raised hand at all times. Focus and concentrate as hard as you can. If your mind begins to stray to other thoughts, bring your attention back to your hand and continue.
Another beneficial technique to use with this pain relieving exercise is to time your breathing. Inhale while you are raising your arm upwards and exhale as you bring it back down. This will increase the pain relief and help keep you focused on the pain relieving exercise.
