Paint Color Schemes for Decorating Your Home

Heather K. Adams
Ever since I was a young girl, I dreamed of owning my own home so I could decorate it with whatever colors I wanted. I still don't own a home, but I have had plenty of time to figure out the perfect paint color scheme for each room of the house.

Paint Color Scheme for the Kitchen

My dream kitchen is bright and cheerful, borrowing colors from citrus fruits. Bright lemony yellow, orangey orange, and lime green sounds like a commercial for Trix cereal, but this color scheme would be great for a kitchen. Decorate the back splash with fruity tiles, buy potholders and dish towels with pictures of citrus fruit, and get some fun dishes to match the decor.

The color scheme paint I would choose for my perfect kitchen is Sherwin-Williams 6921 Electric Lime, Sherwin-Williams 6887 Navel, and Sherwin-Williams 6909 Lemon Twist.

Paint Color Scheme for the Master Bathroom

I've always wanted a beach theme for my dream master bathroom. Fun seashells, pretty sea blue and sand colors, and fish netting decorating the walls is great for a master bathroom. The color scheme of the beach is light and airy, lending a relaxed feel as you scurry around getting ready for your busy day.

A great color scheme for the master bathroom is Sherwin-Williams 7132 Water Squirt, Sherwin-Williams 7115 Conch Shell, and Sherwin-Williams 7535 Sandy Ridge.

Paint Color Scheme for the Living Room/Family Room

I love versatility in a color scheme. I am constantly changing my wall art, and I like being flexible with my furniture color. Choosing a warm, neutral paint color for the living room or family room will allow you to change your look just by adding a few new accent pieces.

A very pretty paint shade for the walls of your living room or family room would be Sherwin-Williams 6679 Full Moon, which has a brown undertone, or Sherwin-Williams 6350 Intricate Ivory, which has a very subtle pink hue.

Paint Color Scheme for the Child's Bedroom (Boy and Girl)

When my son was born, I wanted desperately to give him a sophisticated twist on the traditional baby blue bedroom. I was imagining a slate blue, a dark grey, and a pure white. Sherwin-Williams 6188 Shade-Grown and 7619 Labradorite with a pure white paint would work well as a color scheme for a little boy.

My girlfriend recently redid her color scheme for her daughter's room. I would have never thought to put pinks and browns together, but it looked gorgeous. A medium pink and a chocolate brown really made the room look feminine, yet the colors aren't childish and can continue to work as the little girl gets older. Sherwin-Williams 6619 Sockeye and Sherwin-Williams 6048 Terra Brun are great paint choices for this color scheme.

Paint Color Scheme for the Master Bedroom

This is the one room I have been able to paint and decorate with my own colors. The landlord had some really awful, loud wallpaper in the master bedroom, and I knew I would never sleep peacefully with yellow and blue flowers screaming at me. Because I was limited to neutrals, I had to get creative with the color scheme. I chose a light caramel color paint. I kept the white trim, because the room has white lace curtains. The carpet is a faded blue, which may have been navy when new. I pulled the blue of the carpet and the white of the curtains into the walls with some framed posters above the bed. On the bed, I have a patchwork spread which has blocks of colors in deep caramel, navy blue, forest green, and burgundy.

It started out as an accident, but it worked so well I would do it again on purpose. The feel of the room is cozy and warm, perfect for relaxing slumber. The paint color scheme I recommend for the master bedroom is Sherwin-Williams 6654 Surprise Amber, Sherwin-Williams 6964 Pulsating Blue, and a pure white. This paint color scheme will also flow well with the beach color scheme from the master bathroom.

Great ideas here, I've been living w/ the same bland colors for 3 years, I need to get these ideas on the wall :-)

Great ideas! I love pink and brown together. I also like the citrus colors idea, but maybe if they were lighter. My one friend had her room painted bright orange and green and it was just so overdone.
