Painting Kids Furniture: 5 Makeover Tips

Rissa Watkins
Painting kids' furniture is a fun and easy project for you and your children. A little paint can give a facelift to your kids' furniture, especially if they have outgrown their current furniture. You can create unique furnishings for your child's room by adding a little paint. Old furniture can be made new with a coat of paint and a little imagination.

Bright colors

Kids' furniture doesn't have to follow the same rules as adult furniture. Paint with bright colors and even try painting with multiple colors to make it funky and fun. Involve your child in the process and allow them to pick their paint colors then hand them a brush and let them help you out. Be sure to use a drop cloth for easy clean up of any spills.

Cartoon characters

Painting cartoon characters on furniture is sure to delight any child. Look for stencils or free hand directly onto the furniture in pencil so you can use the pencil as a guideline when painting. Use inexpensive furniture for this project because your child's interest in the cartoon may change quickly.

3-D

Paint flowers all over your daughter's furniture. Create a 3-D effect by using appliqués available in most craft stores of butterflies, lady bugs or birds and gluing or sticking directly on the furniture. You can even try hot gluing some plastic flowers to a few pieces.

Frills

If your little girl likes pink and purple, paint furniture one color and then buy lace in the other color and glue to furniture as a fringe. Little boys can have a sports theme by painting the furniture to look like a football field. Cut a football in half and glue to the side or try a small helmet. These extra touches will make your child's furniture extra special to them because no one else will have the exact same thing.

Paint Type

When painting kids' furniture safety and durability should be your main concerns after you decide what your child would like. If you are repainting old furniture check to make sure no lead paint was used previously. If so, sand all of it off or buy something new. Buy paint labeled as durable. Avoid flat colors as they can be hard to clean.

Bring new life into your child's furniture by painting or repainting it. Adding finishing touches will make it unique and fun. You can even have your child help and turn it into a family activity. Why not try painting your kid's furniture today?

As I was reading this, I was thinking little splashes of glow-in-the-dark colors would work well too probably.
