Palo Alto School Board is voting on November 9, 2010 for the structure of the next calendar year of instruction. School calendars are broken down by:

--186 workdays for teachers (teachers start school 2 days earlier than students, have 3 staff development days, and one workday in June)
--180 instructional days for students

The proposal to start school a week earlier in August, and have finals prior to the holiday break is the issue. There are currently 15 out of 21 school districts in the county that now have calendars with this schedule.

The one thing that many do not realize is this shortchanges teachers pay. A teacher will lose one week of time-off that will never be recaptured by having the school year start a week early. It will only be when they quit or retire that they recapture that week. Is the school saving money by making this shift? That is a question to ask the school board.
