Pamella Roland: Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Review

The Fall 2009 Collection

Paula Andra
Pamella Roland is a New York design house, owned by Pamella DeVos and Ron Leal. They're popular with the Hollywood crowd. Their designs have been seen on the red carpet and have been worn by Carrie Underwood and Daisy Fuentes. Their collection is elegant with clean lines and far ranging from casual and business to dress, party and evening wear along with outerwear. The collection includes fur pieces or fur trim, feather trim, beading, diamonds, embroidery and embellished trims accentuating garments in plums, reds, greens, black, browns, maroons, winter whites, gold, plaid, and gradients of color.

They used silk, cashmere, wool and various types of leathers in their clothing with different textures such as satin, chiffon, velvet, chintz, flannel, jacquard, bouclé, crepe, organza, jersey and basket weave. The most notable accessories were fur hats with the outerwear and tights with most of the collection except for the pants and long gowns.

Their treatment of the asymmetric neckline was polished and unique, such as the plunging one shoulder, floor length gown in deep red, the black floor length dress with the sequined one shoulder strap and the short deep red sequined dress with a one bow-tie shoulder strap and an asymmetrical swishy hem.

Many of their long dresses have demi trains. Theirs is the first feather dress that I've ever liked. I never thought that there would ever be an attractive feather trimmed dress that didn't look overdone or kitchy. However, this particular edition is elegant with it's sequined and feathered long white hem.

Their outfits have various silhouettes from body conscious column dresses to swingy gathered skirt dresses with jackets or coats over many of the outfits. They also used shift dresses in a lot of different shapes. They dealt with the layering of the garments in elegant tiers or wispy clouds of ethereal tiers that were horizontal, diagonal or perpendicular in direction as well as with layering of outer garments over the outfits.

They did an interesting update on the white shirt, with a very large bow falling down the front past the waist. Actually, they used white in intriguing places such as in tights, coats, jackets and the lining of a black and white printed coat over a white dress with a black scarf and black tights. That's very striking.

Their collection can be viewed on their website, which also lists the retailers who carry their line. http://www.pamellaroland.com/index.php

Two of my favorite pieces are the Cranberry Python Trench Jacket with mink trim over the Cranberry Sateen Chiffon Tiered Skirt and the multi-paned, multi toned gold, sleeveless, Degrade Embroidered Fabergé dress. I would accessorise the gold dress with my silvery sequined wedgies and a gold and rose floral lame' purse
that I have. I would wear the cranberry outfit with my crew necked, long sleeved, burgundy velvet top, black pantyhose and heeled knee high black boots with my black smooth leather purse or black velvet heels with my black velvet purse.

I planned to teach college art in studio & history. But I needed to home school our son and did short term missions instead, which benefited from my education. I write about the trips I take for our ministry.  View profile
