Pros
Out of the box this unit requires some simple assembly. You need to hook the three pieces to the vacuum body and you're all set. It feels sturdy and even though it's all plastic it still look well built.
The suction power of the 12-amps motor is very good. Cleaning carpets and rugs is a breeze with this upright. On hardwood and tile floors this vacuum also does a great job. So basically, on both carpet and bare floors this vacuum can easily pick up anything in its path. The cleaning path is pretty wide too; 15-inches.
The Panasonic MCUG471 comes with 24-foot power cord. It is good enough to cover a medium-sized room without having to change power outlets. The power cord is retractable. Just press a button and the cord will rewind itself back into the machine.
The best part of this upright is that it is very quiet. If you live in an apartment this vacuum won't bring in complaints from your neighbor.
Cons
There are some major and minor grieves about this vacuum. The first major grief is that this vacuum won't work on deep-pile carpets. It is hard to move around on thick carpets and the motor could burn itself when it's choked. The second major grief is that you cannot use this vacuum to clean bare floors without the attachment so it won't auto adjust when you're switching from carpet to bare floors. If you forgot to use the attachment you will break this vacuum.
The minor grieves include the wheel, filter, hose holder and the weight. The wheels are made of cheap plastic instead of rubber. Plastic wheels tend to break after a while since you will most likely bump the vacuum here and there.
The filter is small and not reusable so you need to spend more money on the replacements. The hose holder on the back does not keep the hose in place. Even if you lean it a little the hose will fall.
And finally, this unit weighs 25 pounds which means lugging it upstairs would be a pain.
Conclusion
If your house is mostly low-pile carpets with very little hardwood or bare floors and you don't mind the weight or the all-plastic body this Panasonic upright would be a great vacuum cleaner to have. It has good suction and all kinds of nice feature. It is affordable too. Some 12-amps uprights cost more than $200 but the Panasonic MCUG471 only cost about $125 in most stores.
