Pantene Pro V Classic Total Style Control Wasn't as Good as Walgreens Own Brand

Susan Slade
I could choose 2 Pantene hair products for a total of $1.97 at CVS. The way it worked was, the original price was $5.49 each. I immediately got $2.00 off each of the products. Then used the $3.00 off manufacturers coupon in the newspaper, and then received a $2 'extra bucks' coupon when I checked out.

The 2 products I chose were a hairspray, and the Pantene Pro V Classic Style Total Control Gel. Today I am writing about the gel.

Most of my styling gels are in bottles, or just plain clear tubes. However the Pantene Pro V Classic Style Gel, is in a striking tube. It stands on its cap. The cap, and top are black, and then it has turquoise and white on the top. The tube has a net weight of 6.8 ounces (193 g).

Years ago I changed from mousse to gel and have never regretted it.

I washed my hair with a color treated shampoo, and then used a good quality conditioner. I towel dried it, and then flipped the lid on the Pantene Pro V Classic Style Total Control Gel. It also states on the front, "Control and shine with long lasting hold". it has the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4, and the 2 is highlighted. Then below this is says "Strong Hold".

I bought this because of the 'Total Control' and the 'Strong Hold'.

The gel that came out was thick and clear. I squeezed enough to cover the palm of my hand. It had a very light fresh, and floral fragrance to it. I then rubbed my palms together. I dabbed them all over my hair. I then got my fingers and ran them through my hair. I did this several times to make sure that every strand of my hair was covered.

I had a little of the gel on my hands, and also a few hairs that had come out. I washed this off of my hands. I then got my round, bristle hairbrush, and the hairdryer and blow dried my hair.

With my Walgreens own make gel, my hair comes out slightly hard, and crunchy. Then when I blow dry it, it really holds the curl.

With the Pantene Pro V Classic Style Total Control Gel, this didn't happen. My hair lifted with the use of the hairbrush and hairdryer, but it didn't feel firm.

I used the curling iron on it, teased it, and then put it up in a French twist. My hair was softer than I thought it would be, but wasn't completely floppy. I would have to say that the Pantene Pro V Classic Style Gel has an average hold. No way does it have a 'Strong Hold' as stated on the front of the tube.

After using hairspray on my styled hair, it didn't move, but I wouldn't put it down to the gel. I keep my hair in this style for 4 to 5 days, before washing it. I take down the back each night, and then put it back up in the morning. My hair did look good during this time, but I honestly believe it was the amount of teasing, and the volume of hairspray I used.

What Pantene say about their product, from the back of the tube:

"Know the hair you have to get the hair you want.
For all hair types seeking a simple, healthy-looking style.
Pantene Pro-V innovation:
Strong hold formula supports your hair structure to provide all-day control and shine, without the stickiness. Your hair is healthy-looking and your style defined."

If this hadn't been on sale, I would have been disappointed with it, but for 98 cents, it does an average job. When I need to buy a gel again, it will be Walgreens own brand.

Sometimes I find that the store brand is better than the name brand. Thanks for this.... :o)
