Panthers Sign QB David Carr to a Two-Year Deal

After needing to sign a backup quarterback with the release of Chris Weinke, the Carolina Panthers sign former No. 1 overall pick David Carr to a two-year deal.

The former Fresno State quarterback signed with the team on Friday morning after he returned from a two-day visit with the Seattle Seahawks. Carr, who was the first pick in the 2002 NFL Draft, was released after his former team, the Houston Texans, traded with the Atlanta Falcons for Matt Schaub. Schaub was named the starting quarterback despite Carr's 68.3 completion percentage last season.

Carr's career record as a starting quarterback was 24-56, and the Texans finished last in the AFC South with a 6-10 record in 2006.

Carr was thrown under center almost immediately after being selected in the NFL Draft. For the majority of his time in Houston, they did not possess an offensive line to protect him. Despite that, Carr started 75 out of the possible 80 games played during his time there. Carr was sacked 249 times during his tenure in Houston.

His best season in Houston came in 2003 when he finished with a 83.5 quarterback rating, with 16 touchdown passes, and 14 interceptions. He had 59 touchdown passes and 65 interceptions while in Houston.

Carolina Panthers starting quarterback Jake Delhomme missed three games last year with an injured thumb. Delhomme still threw for 2,805 yards with 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. The team had to go with Weinke after his injury, and went 1-2 in his starts. The team finished a very disappointing season by going 8-8 on the campaign.
