When we got married last year, my wife and I spent a morning visiting 3 different wedding cake shops in Portland. Besides getting sugared out, we found a clear winner in our quest to get our wedding cake done.
We made an appointment with Papa Haydn mostly out of sheer fun and curiousness. We figured, because of their huge reputation and gourmet menu - that their cakes would be out of our budget.
We made an appointment before the restaurant opened on a Saturday morning, and when we arrived we were escorted into the restaurant by their wedding cake planner. She offered us coffee and sat us down at a table to which a chef brought out this fantastic display of their wedding cakes. Each kind of cake - 8 in all I believe - was displayed on a plate, with each flavor basically shaped like a flower petal, arranged from light to dark.
The planner than proceeded to walk/guide us around the plate as we sampled each flavor. There were the standards like German Chocolate and poppy seed, as well as some flavors whose names I couldn't pronounce, but were absolutely delicious.
Now because we were planning a larger wedding (200 guests, most of which are from my wife's side!), we were going to need quite a bit of cake. We ended up going with 5 separate cakes that would be displayed together, that we could have a variety of flavors and frostings.
The planner spent a bunch of time asking us questions about designs we liked in their portfolio, went over any ideas we had, and helped us decide on flavors.
We got our quote and headed to the next shop. It was nice to compare, but really - there wasn't much comparing to be done - we had tasted the best and were spoiled by that point.
Besides the quality of cake - we were also impressed with the professionalism of the wedding planner and the whole presentation. Because there are so many parts to a wedding, it's great when your vendors know the process and make it as painless as possible.
After we got all of our quotes - we were really happy to find out Papa Haydn's quote was about $150 dollars more than the others. But that also included delivery and set up - and basically all we had to do was make sure we had described what we wanted - other than that, it was all going to be taken care of us by professionals.
Because we had saved in other areas - we decided to go with Papa Haydn simply because it was a relatively small cost that we figured would be made up for the super professionalism and ease of working with - not to mention that beautiful cake we ended up with.
If you're looking at wedding cakes in Portland, Oregon - don't rule out Papa Haydn simply because you think it might be out of your budget - you'll be surprised how competitive they are in the wedding cake market of Portland. And you'll definitely be happy with the end result!
