Paper Crafts: Homemade Glue Recipe for Kid Crafts

Avoid a Sticky Situation!

Pam Gaulin
Running out of glue in the middle of making a paper craft is no fun, especially on a rainy day.

Some paper crafts just stick together better with some good glue.

Don't worry, kids and parents can work together to make their own homemade glue for paper crafts, that can be used in any kids crafts or rainy day crafts.

This homemade glue recipe requires use of the stove, and should only be done with parental supervision.

Ingredients for the Homemade Glue Recipe

First, a note about measurements. Kids, know the standard abbreviations for recipes when making anything in the kitchen.

tspn = teaspoon
tbspn = tablespoon

Okay, onto the ingredients!

1 tbspn white vinegar
3 tbspns water
1 tspn liquid glycerin
2 1/2 tspns of of unflavored gelatin - don't use flavored Jell-o! Save that for snack time!

Liquid glycerin can be purchased at a local drugstore or any arts and crafts supply store which sells soap making or lotion making supplies. Liquid glycerin sounds like a big nasty chemical, but it is a natural product derived from plants and or from animals.

How to Make Homemade Glue for Paper Crafts

!Kids Help:

Kids can help make the homemade glue for paper crafts by pre-measuring some ingredients into the small bowl.

Take the measuring spoons and measure the 2 1/2 tspns of of unflavored gelatin and pour it into a small bowl cup.

In a different bowl or cup, pour in one tablespoon of white vinegar plus the one teaspoon of liquid glycerin.

While the child helper is measuring those ingredients, the adult can boil the water on the stove in the pan.

When it water comes to a full boil, which you can tell by the big bubbles, it's time to add the gelatin.

Now the adult can add the gelatin to the boiling water and stir until all of the gelatin has dissolved.

Next pour in the vinegar and glycerin mixture. Stir.

Let the mixture cool completely.

The glue can be spooned into the jar and covered.

The glue should be ready for use in a couple of days. So make some ahead of time.

When it's time to make paper crafts on a rainy day and you need to use the glue, have an adult heat the glass jar (without the cover) in amicrowave for about 20 seconds.

    Wow! We make a lot of stuff at home, but I never knew you could make glue. Glycerine is hard to find around here, but good for all sorts of stuff.
