Paper Toilet Seat Covers. Are They Effective?

AmyBrowne
Paper toilet seat covers are in many public bathrooms but how much protection do they offer anyone? Are these for a valid reason or simply a peace of mind endeavor for millions of Americans and tourists that come to our great nation?

Recently while surfing on yahoos ask a question site, I ran across an article about those paper toilet seat covers. I know many women who swear by them but I too have often wondered the safety factor in using these. As a health professional, I know that germs are everywhere humans venture.

The reality of public restrooms is they are public and while you will not catch, a sexually transmitted disease from sitting on them you may get sick otherwise. Herpes and the rest of the sexually transmitted diseases are not attainable from toilet seats, simply because they cannot live without a human host for very long. They die within a few minutes of leaving a human body, so they do not last long on a toilet seat or any other surface. A paper toilet seat cover will not help you in this way.

The only way you will catch a sexually transmitted disease is if you have sex on the toilet itself with a person who has a disease. Since not too many people care to have sex in public bathrooms, the chance of you catching a sexually transmitted disease off a toilet seat is non-existent even with a paper toilet seat cover.

Germs, which cause other types of illnesses such as a virsus, can be found upon a toilet seat as well, but it is extremely rare you can catch anything in this way. However, the person before you would have had to wipe the germs on the seat, and you would have to wipe your hands on the seat in the right place. Then you would have to touch your nose or mouth to get the germs inside your body and you would never do that.

So what good are these paper toilet seat covers to those of us who use them? It provides peace of mind to us, that we will have a clean dry bottom.

Convenience stores and gas stations, well I never venture into those bathrooms unless it is an emergency because of the dribbles. Dribbles are spots of urine left on the toilet seat by men and women who rush the urination process leaving a mess. We have all seen them before, you know what I am speaking of. In cases of emergency, I will toss a paper toilet seat covers on the seat itself and use my shoed foot to push around the paper toilet seat covers soaking up the dribbles and kick it into the toilet itself. Then I will toss yet another paper toilet seat covers on the seat for peace of mind.

The real germs can be found where people touch with their hands such as the faucets, soap dispensers, and doorknobs the paper toilet seat cover will not help here. When you are done washing your hands, use the paper towel to turn off the faucets, and open the door. You can always dispose of the paper towel in a near by garbage can on the outside of the bathroom after you exit.

If you buy the paper toilet seat covers, keep on purchasing them but please remember they do little more then offer peace of mind to the millions who use them on a daily basis. Source: http://ask.yahoo.com/20060217.html

I know this is an old article, but I came across this today for the second time and I can't find a place that mentions how disgusting these toilet seat covers are. In my office, we have toilet seat liners available in every stall. However, I have found dead bugs PRESSED into the liner TWICE! They seem to have been processed into the liner, not just crawled on it and died. What kind of company produces these liners without quality control? I am never using them again.

I think by the time you mess with the toilet seat cover and get it on the seat you have aquired way more germs than what could ever transfer from your butt cheeks to your hands. Germs don't enter your body from your thighs/butt cheeks but they will get there fairly easily once you get them on your hands. I do have to laugh at people that use these covers. And they really make me mad when they are so rude as to leave them on the seat and I have to clean up after them!

Hmm, now that's interesting sex on a toilet seat, chuckle.

Great article. It's true that paper toilet seat covers offer more peace of mind than germ prevention. My husband and I actually produce small travel packs of this product. We even use marketing lingo that is geared towards peace of mind than germs because we know that this product does not necessarily protect against germs. In fact our tagline is "because you never know". That's what paper toilet seat covers are about - an extra barrier between you and the last person. If anyone is looking to buy small travel packs please visit my website.

I am another one who has often wondered what the effectiveness of these paper toilet seat covers was. I am glad to hear that I am not causing myself any health threats by not using them. Very interesting article

I prefer them because women just are slobs when it comes to public bathrooms. I have no idea why people use the facilities yet don't feel the need to flush - even after #2. I've seen the works in my gym bathroom and it really grosses me out.

I'm convinced that signs should be placed on the bathroom doors reminding women to flush. And we think men are the pigs? If there are no toilet seat covers available then I use toilet paper to line the seats. Staph bacteria are everywhere so you do have to be careful, especially in areas where there are skin openings - a cut or no cut, these bacteria will find a way into your system if you have low immunity. I know first hand what it's like to have to be extra careful because of MRSA.

Toilet seat covers are not just in America. Additionally, Europe and the UK usually have self flushing public toilets, and often times have toilet wipes as well.

I agree. What I find awful is how some women leave those damn things on the seat (using an abundance of them, too!) without having the common decency to clean up afterwards! Rude and wasteful. Good article.

I did an article on eHow about women who can't use public restrooms without making a mess. I just don't understand it myself. We would have no need for covers if everyone would treat public restrooms like the ones at home. Women can't pee standingup! No matter how hard they try..lol.

I love 'em! In fact I prefer them! YES YOU CAN TOO CATCH CRABS ON PUBLIC TOILET SEATS. IT HAPPENED TO TWO BUDDIES IN BOOT CAMP!! There was no time at all for panky-hanky.
