Parades, Silence, Poppies, and Services to Honor Our Serviceman on Memorial Day

Major Events in Washington State in 2009

Sheri Fresonke Harper
In 2009, Washington state has many services to honor our serviceman and remember their contributions in protecting our country at home and around the world, during peace time and during war. If you encounter someone handing out paper poppies, please wear it in a button hole, on your hat or wherever you can attach it. According to Memorial Day history, the tradition of wearing poppies began when Moina Michael started the tradition by wearing one and selling others to her friends to help support serviceman in 1915.

Also at 3:00, everyone is urged to observe a moment of silence to remember those who have served in the military, a practice established in 2000.

Many servicemen from World War I, World War II, Vietnam, the Korean War, Desert Storm, Operation Freedom and the Iraqi Freedom War are still alive and deserve the respect. Serviceman have also participated in actions ordered by the President of the United States in such places as Grenada, Somalia, Haiti, Yugoslavia, the Congo, Albania, the Dominican Republic - a full list is found on the Memorial Day history site linked above. I was impressed by the sheer scope of where Americans have served and in what capacity.

Since the late 50's on the Thursday before Memorial Day, the 1,200 soldiers of the 3d U.S. Infantry place small American flags at each of the more than 260,000 gravestones at Arlington National Cemetery.

It is very important to honor the memory of those who lost their lives for our freedom and to thank those that are still with us.

It's important to remember those that fought and died so that we could act like idiots and call each other names and be hateful. Such behavior dishonors those men and women but they would have still fought for our right to be that way no matter what.

I always get teary-eyed when I see a veterans parade. It's such a shame that the kids the last 20 years just don't get into honoring our servicemen or making a big deal over Memorial and Veterans Day and the 4th. I remember decorating our bike spokes with red, white and blue crepe paper, riding along side the parade, and saluting the veterans. They just don't do that anymore.
