Parasites - 5 Internal Parasites Your Dog Can Contract

J. Bouche
The most common internal canine parasite is the heartworm, a worm that can be fatal if left untreated. However, there are five other internal worms that are almost as common and just as dangerous to your dog. Read on to learn about these parasites, how to check for symptoms and the best methods of treatment.

1. Hookworms

Like many parasites, the hookworm is contracted by eating the feces of other infected dogs and animals. Common hookworm symptoms include diarrhea, flatulence, an increase in appetite, dehydration and a noticeable increase in appetite. The hookworm lives in the small intestine and can infect humans. Hookworm can be treated with drugs.

2. Whipworms

The whipworm, like most worms, is also contracted through feces. However, your dog can also contract this nasty parasite by simply stepping on another animal's poo and later licking its own paws. Common whipworm symptoms include loose or watery stools, anemia, bloody feces, dry or brittle fur, dehydration and an increase in appetite. The whipworm lives in the large intestine and can cause trichuriasis if it infects a human.

3. Roundworms

Roundworm infections are typically caused by eating uncooked meat infected with roundworm larvae or through an open cut or wound. Typically, roundworms live in your dog's lungs and vital organs, including the heart and the liver. Once the larvae mature, they move to the lower intestine. Symptoms of roundworm include flatulence, noticeable surges in appetite, diarrhea, loose stools and bloating. Roundworm can infect humans and is typically treated with drugs.

4. Giardia

The giardia, like many other parasites, is picked up near standing water, small lakes or ponds. If you work with your dog in the water or allow it to swim outside, you should get it checked regularly for giardia. Common giardia symptoms include inflammation, mucus stools, noticeable weight loss, tenderness and bloating. The giardia lives in the small intestine and can infect a human.

5. Tapeworms:

One of the most common intestinal parasites, the tapeworm makes its living by feeding off your dog's digested food. Typical tapeworm symptoms include an increase in appetite, weight loss, rectal inflammation, hacking or coughing, and visible signs of worms in your dog's feces or orifices. Sometimes, tapeworms look like rice on the outside of the stool. Humans can become infected, though tapeworms are treatable with over the counter de-worming medications.
