Parents Call for Removal of Superintendent Over Sexting Scandal

COMMENTARY | The removal of a police officer from Deer Path School has renewed the attention on the sexting scandal involving former Principal John Steinert and a college intern. Even though Steinert has resigned his position at the school, parents are calling for the resignation of the superintendent as well.

While the parents' wrath is perfectly understandable, going as far as having the superintendent removed seems a bit extreme. Superintendent Harry Griffith appears to have done everything by the book and acted upon the situation based on the evidence he was given at the time. Now that all the facts of the sexting scandal have been made public, parents are accusing the superintendent and school board for covering up evidence when in reality, they did nothing of the kind. They simply did not have all the facts given to them when they were considering what disciplinary actions were necessary therefore it is unfair to say they didn't do enough.

Another thing to take into consideration is that even though this involved a principal of a middle school all acts described in the scandal did not involve any students nor were witnessed by any students. The sexting scandal itself consisted of direct messaging from one person to another and all parties involved were adults. Removal of the offending persons should be considered enough action to satisfy any parents of students attending that school.

Perhaps the parents rage against Superintendent Griffith is fueled by the recent scandal at Penn State where there was evidence of a cover up. This sexting scandal however, does not show the same signs as the one at Penn State and therefore should not be compared as apples to apples. Deer Path parents need to take another look at all the facts laid out before them before rushing to have the superintendent removed.

People get far too bent out of shape these days. We have gone from one extreme to another!

I understand people being upset, but embellishing a story to make it uglier is a bit extreme...
