Parents Now Have Ownership Over Their Deceased Sons' Sperm

Woman Extracts Sperm from Dead Son's Body to "Fulfill His Dream"

I recently read a disturbing article about a woman who's son was killed in Iraq four years ago at age 19. The mother, Rachel Cohen said her son Kevin approached her in a dream telling her of his desire to father a child.

"He appeared in my dream and asked me, mom what's with my child? Please hurry," said Cohen. "I woke up with a big sweat and decided to go ahead, all the way."

The mother contacted a non-profit organization called "New Family" which is dedicated to advancing family rights. The organization is trying to convince people to write a "biological will," which in case of death would allow doctors to extract sperm from their bodies," explained Irit Rosenblum, the founder of "New Family" and Cohen's lawyer.
Rachel requested doctors to freeze her dead son's sperm and sent out an odd request:

Would a woman come forward and give birth to Cohen's dead son's child? The mother interviewed over 200 women over the course of two years: medical tests were conducted, meetings with psychologists took place and finally one was chosen. "She won my heart right away," said Cohen.

Then came the legal battle, which was fought around the ruling permitting only the wife of a deceased man to extract his sperm and to become impregnated by it. The new ruling now recognizes the parent's right over a dead child's sperm. Last time I checked how things worked in the world, a person does not consult his or her parents before having children. It is a decision he or she makes with their partner. The individual owns their body. One might make a biological will to freeze sperm for their wife, but how can the courts rule that the sperm of a child belongs to the parents? Sick and weird. Any parent that WANTS their son's sperm is also sick and weird.

Rachel Cohen is now awaiting the birth of her grandson or granddaughter.

This story is disturbing, erie and unethical on so many levels. First off, when are we going to stop playing God. If God or whatever greater power one believes in wanted Kevin to have a child, it would have happened in his lifetime. Seriously, where are we going to stop? Next thing you know, we'll be sewing third and fourth arms on people so we can do more multi-tasking!

Secondly, The operative word in all of this is "father". The man had a dream of "fathering a child". This man, sadly, is dead. He cannot "father" a child. He is only a sperm donor. The future grandmother is doing nothing toward fulfilling her son's dream. She is only compounding problems for the living because of her understandably horrific grief that she cannot get over. She needs to see a counselor.

How many problems is this kid going to have when he grows up? How are they going to explain what happened to this child? How is he going to feel that his father had been dead for 4 years before he was conceived? If this mother wanted a grandchild so bad, why doesn't she wait for her other children to have children? If she wants a child herself, there are plenty of children in the world waiting to be adopted. Who is allowing people to be doing such disturbing things!
