Parents Outraged Over Adam Lambert's AMA Performance

Kristen Anne Harvey
The American Music Awards has from time to time included a few questionable performances in a parent's mind. However, with Taylor Swift anticipated as the main attraction for the tween crowd, more parents allowed then to stay up for the singing sensation who has managed to show girls that popularity does not need to lead to a life of sex , drugs, and reckless living. And after all, what Mom could say no to her daughter after Swift's interview with Country Music Magazine where she stated "Before I make a decision, I stop and think about the 10-year-old girl I saw last night at my concert in the front row. I think about her mom. I can't imagine a greater pain than letting one of those mothers down."

Directly after Swift left the stage it was time for Adam Lambert's performance. And while Lambert had promised a racy performance to draw public attention to his first album "For Your Entertainment" which would be released the next day, most parents who let their tweens and teens watch- could not have expected the show to reach near-pornographic proportions.

To say the show was lewd would be a huge understatement. It would be considered "over the top" by most adult's standards. To say that parents are outraged would be yet another understatement. This was not the MTV awards. This was the American Music Awards. The AWA was started by Dick Clark in the 1970's to give the audience a say in how the awards are distributed (in contrast to the Grammy's which are decided by the Entertainment Industry). Families have stayed up late together for decades to watch this. If this issue is not addressed, executives can count on contentious parents saying "no" to the event next year.

And while the stunt might just boost sales for this first album, it will not necessarily translate into a huge fan base. If Lambert was looking to make his performance the talk of the town, he may have achieved that, but making a spectacle of the AMA on the eve of his debut may not have been the best time and place. At the very least, Dad won't be letting his daughters go to Lambert's concerts anytime soon, if she still even wants to go herself.

This current teen generation has been proactive in reducing teen pregnancies, pledging abstinence and saying "no" to drugs. More teens have open communication with their parents than ever before. Close family relationships are becoming more valuable than rebellion to the group that benefits the most from them: teens. Parenting blogs are already blowing up about the display. Parents are concerned, parents are outraged and in recent years parents have become more involved and active in their teens lives as a positive and respected influence. So while some might not care that Mom thinks the guy is a pig: many more will. And that might just be enough to steer teens away.

Okay guys, this is dumb. He's not doing anything that other people havent done before. Britney Spears and Madonna made out on stage, people have been doing provocitive things on stage for a long time. What he did was not 'pornographic', or anywhere near it. He made out with a guy. So what? I've seen worse in a pg 13 movie. Just for the record, i am 13 years old. And i love adam lambert, i think what he did on that stage was a beautiful statement. And my parents like him too, the have no objection to him. And i know alot of people who feel the same way. And really, is this even about what he did, or is it about you guys hating gays?

I love Adam Lambert and I bought his cd. That being said, the performance was a bit much, though at that late hour no kids should have been up watching it anyway. just my opinion.

Don't even have TV here anymore...we just watch netflix movies we can CHOOSE. This Adam L. kind of stuff has no place on TV at all, in my opinion. Like the class clown of yesteryear..."Just ignore him. If he thinks you're watching, it will only egg him on." I wish it were that simple. Your article is very good.

I have to admit that I didn't watch the awards show, but I did follow the American Idol program with Adam all the way through. Although the scenes I saw later did disgust me, I was not totally surprised since all through AI, Adam made no secret about his love of hard rock and roll music. So I really wasn't surprised that he went for shock value. Personally, I found him through AI to be a little out of the mainstream simply because of that and wondered who his target audience would be once he tried to go professional. When he performed with Kiss on one show, I thought to myself that he might do well in that era, but that's not really what I find most young people that interested in at this point. I agree, though, that it hurt the credibility of the awards and their future because parents will be much more apt to discourage viewing by their children. Nice write up.

It is not only Adam. It is the whole Media. It is disgusting how the Network Executives allow this to happen. It is the ratings that they are concerned with. This is why the News ratings are dropping. Oprah,Ellen,Jerry,Maury, Rush and Glenn are all contributing to the garbage we watch. We need a National Boycott TV Day to send these self absorbed people a message. Then we can boycott Lindsay Lohan, Rihannah,Jon and Kate and all the rest that serve no purpose. We need a leader that will take this position.
