Shocked, Paris along with her sister Nicky and mother Kathy stumbled out of the court house visibly shaken. Immediately, the cries of the sentencing being too harsh and overboard spread like a wild fire from the Hilton heiress. It's sparked a huge debate that's been argued by different parts of the judicial system as well as the general population.
Well who's right? Is 45 days to long for a first (DUI) offender? Is she just being picked on because of her celebrity status? Or is she deserving of such a sentence due to her actions? I contend it's the later. Paris Hilton needs to go to jail for the following three reasons.
1) Paris has a blatant disregard for the law. Although its been disguised with her pleas of not realizing that her driver's license was revoked, its obvious by her continual use of a vehicle from the time her license was revoked that she never thought the law applied to her. And, as a matter of fact, the reality that she's remained free of jail from the time she got her DUI shows she was partly right. Up until now, she's had very little consequence even when pulled over by the police. Yes - the publicity was bad, but it never showed a truly remorseful Paris. For this reason alone, she needs to have a sobering slap in the face and be reminded that she has to obey the law just like the rest of us.
2) She is a role model for millions of little girls. A portion of her fame has arisen out of the admiration of little girls. Little girls who watch her tv show and buy any product that carries her name. They are fascinated so much with her that they want to be just like her. So these little girls need to know that the offense of a DUI is serious business. People die each year due to drunk drivers, so it can't be brushed off as the antics of a young girls in her 20's. It needs to do be addressed by the court as the crime that it is especially when it involves a star like Paris Hilton.
3) The time fits the crime. Although Hilton along with others claim that the sentencing was harsh, the reality is that the 45 days is within the normal sentencing parameters of the law. The judge did not add on extra time or anything out of the norm. Paris just didn't think she'd get that much time. Her attorney led her to believe it would be a week if anything at all. Unfortunately, this idea was misleading and now she'll pay the consequence just as anyone would who had shaky counsel.
These three points are the main reason I think Paris Hilton needs to serve her time and quit complaining about it. She committed a crime that deserves jail time. So the remainder of her freedom needs to be spent enjoying her family because on June 5, 2005 she is going to jail whether she or any of us thinks it's fair or not.
