Paris Hilton is Grounded

Kathleen McDade
Yes, you heard it right this morning -- Paris Hilton has been released from jail after serving only three days of her 23-day sentence. The reason? An unspecified medical condition. Reportedly, Hilton was not eating or sleeping while in jail, but her actual medical condition has not been released.

She will continue to be under supervision at home, and will wear an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet. Her at-home sentence will be 40 additional days.

Crazy? Sure seems like it. OK, it's possible that there is a real medical issue here -- but do you think that you would get the same treatment in the same situation? I wonder. Let's look at a little history here.

In January, Hilton pleaded no-contest to a reckless driving charge, and was sentenced to 36 months probation. That means she needed to not mess up again for 36 months. A short while later, she was pulled over for driving on a suspended license, and signed a statement acknowledging that she was not supposed to drive. She then apparently ignored this, getting pulled over again on February 27, and charged with violating probation.

And that probation violation was what brought her to jail, after much hoopla about whether she should go there or not. Again, do you think there would be any question about this if it were you? I think you or I would have been in jail long before Hilton was.

And now she's going home. And she has to stay there -- no going out to party. She has to wear an ankle bracelet to make sure she stays there. Her sentence goes back to a full 45 days, minus a five-day credit for time served (I haven't figured out the math on that one yet).

But she's not in jail any more -- basically, she's grounded! And not only that, she's grounded to her "room" with all her toys in it! I'm sure that will be a huge deterrent to further recklessness. Also, people under house supervision are often allowed out to work. Will that be the case with Hilton? Will she find some important celebrity "work" to do?

Paris Hilton needs a wake up call, but this is still not it. She needs to be subject to the same rules and consequences as everyone else. When she finally went to jail, it seemed that this was happening, but yet again, the rules have changed. Paris Hilton will be at home for the next 40 days.

Gee, this seems pretty tame now, with the whole Britney Spears saga still going on.

Paris Hilton seems to have gained in popularity since she was first sent to prison. I think she'll be released this week though, won't she?

It's about time the rich and famous aren't treated differently then we mere average, everyday peons. Now that we all know she's back in jail. I heard Barbara Walters talked to Paris in jail and Paris has resolved to grow up and be a better person after this. Time will tell.

PS -- She's probably suffering drug or alcohol withdrawal symptoms on top of all this...

Well, as we all know, she's back in jail again. I think Paris's big 'medical' problem is Spoiled Brat-itis. Really, have you ever seen a four-year-old have a bizarre tantrum for being told 'no'? I have, and it is SCARY! The crying and anger and thrashing on the ground and screaming and veins pulsing make them as spooky to be around as the little girl in the Exorcist. I've seen the VH-1 show about Paris's life, and her parents clearly worship her and like to go out partying with her. They've never denied her a single thing, it seems. Now, the law is telling her 'no', so she's having a 25-year-old brat's tantrum in there. Parents who spoil their children do them a grave wrong. Eventually, like Paris Hilton, they won't get their way and they can't handle it -- at all.

I consider this a travesty of justice. It just goes to show that there ARE separate standards for the rich and the poor.

I think this is crazy. they should just treat her in the jail. Not let her out! sheesh!
