There are many firm believers out there that harsher punishment equals less crime, or a deterrence in crime. It's a possibility that in Hilton's case, that facing the harsh (yet truly pillowed) consequences for her actions actually enlightened her to see that she is no exception to the law. Initially, Paris Hilton was sentenced to 45 days in prison due to a violation of her probation when she drove while intoxicated. Later Hilton's sentence was heavily reduced to 23 days (about half).
According to MSNBC, Hilton told E! News' host, Ryan Seacrest, that she feels her "gratitude has gone up so much" since the beginning of her stay behind bars in the special housing unit. (MSNBC - Jail has made Paris 'much more grateful')
Hilton went on to describe how grateful she truly feels thanks to her jail time when she said the following to Ryan Seacrest on the phone:
"I'm much more grateful for everything that I have, even just to have a pillow at night or food. [...] I am behind glass and I want to give my dad a big hug and they won't even let me do that. [...] I'm not a criminal, I'm not dangerous. ... It's hard but I'm stronger every day. [...]" (MSNBC - Jail has made Paris 'much more grateful')
It seems as if Paris Hilton is truly grateful for what she receives in the jail, which is nearly bare minimum. She yearns for her fathers' warmth, and now she's grateful to have a mere pillow to lay her head on at night, or food to put in her stomach.
Paris Hilton also realized that the media used her arrest as leverage to easily capitalize, as well as poke fun at her when she stated:
""I just realize that the media used me to make fun of and be mean about it." (MSNBC - Jail has made Paris 'much more grateful') Paris also later stated that she wants to use her fame for good, rather than bad reasons.
With Hilton's release date coming closer and closer, we will see soon enough whether these quotes are truly from the heart, or masked lies to obtain something currently out of reach.
