Metered parking prices and hours are about to increase in Park Slope. These increases are part of the New York City Department of Transportation's (DOT) "Park Smart" program. DOT increased the hourly parking rate for meters around Fifth and Seventh Avenues from $.75 to $1.50, between noon to 4 p.m. last year.

That increase was supposed to be a trial period and it has now become permanent. Community Board Six approves this DOT change and now Park Smart hours are extended until 7 p.m.

The program encourages drivers to spend less time at meters when demand is high so that other drivers can find parking, but the program seems to be discouraging people from driving in Brooklyn. At least it is starting to reduce some of Park Slope's congestion.
