Part, Knot and Braid Hair for Carefree Summer Style

Trendy Looks for Long and Mid-Length Hair

Karen LoBello

Medium-length and long hair never lose their appeal. After all, what's easier than washing your hair and then creating a simple, flattering style in a matter of minutes? Longer hair provides options that are especially welcome in warm summer months. Whether you're dropping by a friend's house, spending the day at the beach or attending a formal occasion, think simple and classic -- and a little bit messy -- when you fashion your locks.

Braids

Variations on the braid are growing in popularity. With this option, "less" truly is "more." You don't want to look like you tried too hard. Whether you are working from a pony tail or a chignon, the look can be edgy or soft and romantic. Braids offer an unexpected twist. Go all out by creating Heidi braids or place thin braids strategically to add a pop of style. If you like a loose Bohemian look, try tousling hair to the side and ending with a braid at the bottom. Part wavy hair and add a thin, hairline braid from the crown to the bottom. Create a half-up braided style by letting the bottom portion of the hair hang freely and weaving French braids into two sections on the top.

Double Knot

Maybe you find braids a bit challenging, but if you can tie a knot, you can create this look, made famous on the catwalk. The longer the hair, the better this style works. Generously apply mousse to make sure your hair has lots of texture. Fine hair needs a little extra -- don't be afraid of adding too much. Smooth the hair and part it into two sections, beginning at the crown. Hold one section in each hand. Tie the hair into a knot -- just like you would tie any knot -- at the nape of the neck and tighten it. Now repeat the process, adding a second knot. Secure with a bobby pin on each side. Finish with hair spray. If your hair isn't long enough, you may have to settle for a single knot.

Sleek Pony

Talk about simple -- the sleek ponytail is perfect for busy 21st century women. Prepare your hair by working in texturizing wax from top to bottom. Use a flat iron to make the hair pin-straight. A deep side part pairs well with this style. Pull the hair back, keeping it low at the nape of the neck, and secure it with a tie. Wrap a small section of hair around the tie to finish it and hold it in place with bobby pins. You can change the look with a side swept pony or a ponytail pulled up high on the head. Keep this one in mind for those days when the snooze button on your alarm clock beckons.

I always liked being able to do different things with my hair when it was long.

My hair is pretty long right now, but I hesitate to cut it because I won't be able to pull it up and away from my face. These are great styles.
