Getting Ready to Make a Difference - Again

Nora Beane
Participating in World Wish Day, April 29, 2011 may be something you would like to pencil in to your personal or organization calendar right now. Marking down World Wish Day, April 29, 2011 means putting aside tome and energy to help the International Make-a Wish organization reach out and make dreams come true for children around the world. We talk a lot about our global community and our global village, participating in World Wish Day, April 29, 2011 actually offers you, your family, your company, your organization a chance to act on your words and your ideas. Along with thousands of others you can bolster the efforts of Make-a-Wish International and help them to make a difference - again.

Make-a-Wish Foundation, sponsor of World Wish Day, April 29, 2011, is no newcomer to the area of philanthropy. It has been in existence since 1980. During the thirty years of its existence it has fulfilled the wishes, according to Make-a-Wish statistics, of some 193,000 children. The organization has moved beyond the borders of the United States and now its affiliated Make-a-Wish organizations are at work serving the needs of children in 35 countries around the world.

Children gained consideration as possible wish recipients by applying through a doctor, a parent or by applying in their own behalf. Medical eligibility must be verified by physicians who determine whether or not a child is considered to be suffering from a life threatening disease or condition. A wish team is then sent to spend time with the child to determine what is his or her heartfelt dream. Then efforts begin to make that wish come true. The goal all along of course is to do more than just grant a one time wish. More importantly it is the hope of those at Make-a-Wish Foundation that the granting of the wish provides a challenged child with hope and can be a truly positive force in the midst of difficult times.

Such magic and such inspiration do come at a price and fund raising and awareness raising are central to the continuing mission of Make-a-Wish International. To keep their message and their efforts alive and to continue responding to the needs of hundreds of truly deserving children, Make-a-Wish held its first annual World Wish Day in 2010.

Make -a -Wish affiliates around the world joined on the same day in a celebration that included providing a total of some 275 wishes, raising funds for continued wish granting efforts and making the purposes of Make-a Wish known around the world. In some countries representatives of Make-a-Wish rang the opening bell at their national stock exchange. Elsewhere there were fund raising walks, golf tournaments and in the U. S. a wish centered performance by singer Myley Cyrus.

This year you can join Make-a-Wish International volunteers around the world by participating in World Wish Day, April 29, 2011. For information on how to connect locally with Make-a-Wish for this and other events search their website listed below.
