A contact of mine in the Royal Oak Police Department asked me to pass a message on to readers that there is a preventable crime that is on the rise in Royal Oak. There are more and more cases in the city in which people are breaking into cars to steal personal items. These types of crimes can easily be prevented.

In most cases, people return to their cars to find a broken window, and personal items missing. Some, come back and realize that they never locked their doors, but again, their personal items are missing.

My source pointed out that criminals are on the prowl in many parking lots and along many streets looking in car windows for GPS devices, laptops, iPods, gaming systems, purses, and anything else that might hold value. If Royal Oak residents were to simply hide these items if they needed to keep them in the car, the number of these larcenies would fall.

A quick search of the car could alert Royal Oak residents to any items that they might have left out. Try to put items into the trunk, the glove compartment, under the seat, or hide it under a blanket on the floor. My source told me that he even had a case recently where someone broke into a car simply to steal a pack of cigarettes off of the dash. Keep your items safe.

A little common sense and preventative effort goes a long way. We taught all of our kids to hide their valuables before getting out of the car.
