Your motivation is running high having just watched a Forest Gump run across America for the 88th time on the television, watched Rudy finally play for Notre Dame, or watched highlights from the New York City Marathon. It's time to convert that motivation to actually exercise. Some might want to lose 100 pounds, 20 pounds, or finally get that six-pack. Whatever your inspiration, that is awesome that you want to take a step towards health.
What most people do right around 11:59pm on New Years Eve is to make a resolution to get in shape. All excited, you sign up for a gym membership on January 1st, hop on the treadmill, and lift some weights. Unfortunately, on January 2nd, they decide to put off going to the gym and push it to the next day. That next day becomes next week, and eventually you cancel your credit card so that the gym can stop charging your card.
Don't beat yourself up. All of your good intentions just need a little more accountability to keep you on track. Studies have been shown that when you workout with a buddy or with another person, your chances of success will be increase.
Here are 10 Great Reasons to Exercise with a Buddy, Partner, Group or Club that will help you focus and stay on track
- Friendly competition helps increase the number of reps. If your partner does 20 push ups, you might want to do 21.
- Makes the time fly by faster. Occasionally while working out, you get into a conversation that will occupy your mind, and you don't realize the time is over.
- It's plain safer. Running down an unfamiliar street, biking across town or lifting weights alone, can be dangerous. Having a partner or group will ensure your safety, especially if you get into an accident.
- Having common goals with someone else creates synergy and you can feed off all the good vibes from each other.
- You can share different ideas, because two minds are better than one.
- In a group or club setting you can play different games, where you could not do alone.
- You can watch each other's technique to make sure you perform the exercise correctly. How many times have you done an exercise move and you are in the wrong position and did not even realize?
- Sometimes if the workout is really tough, misery loves company and you can suffer as a group, so that you are not alone.
- If your partner is a significant other, it's another intimate moment that you can share.
- Sometimes you might fall off the bandwagon, and your partner will be there to support and motivate you.
In fact, when you involve 3 or more people in your group, you've improved your success tremendously. This is due to the fact that on occasion, some members of your group will have other obligations and will not be able to workout. Having more than 2 people in the group, someone will be able to check up on you.
