For this project, you will need (per place card holder):
- One silver mint julep cup (available in antique stores, at flea markets, and online)
- Cardstock
- Printer or calligraphy pen
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Craft knife
- Self healing mat
- Flowers (such as carnations) in any color
- Florist's tape
- Scissors
Start by choosing the style of mint julep cup you wish to use. If you are using vintage varieties, decide if you are going to use matching julep cups or mismatched for a shabby appeal. Also decide if you want the cups to be monogrammed or engraved, which many retailers can do for you for only a few dollars. Make sure the cup is clean and free of any dust.
Print your guest's name on a sheet of cardstock using either a printer or a calligraphy pen. Lay the sheet of cardstock flat on a self healing mat. Use a ruler and a pencil to draw a rectangle box around the lettering. Cut out the place card with a craft knife to produce crisp edges. Apply a piece of double sided tape to the back of the place card. Adhere the place card to the side of the mint julep cup.
Join a bunch of flowers together to form a bouquet shape. Cut a small piece of florist's tape. Wrap the tape around the stems just under the buds. Decide how long the stems need to be for the blooms to just set upon the top of the mint julep cup when placed inside. Trim the stems to this size. Secure the stem bunch together with more florist's tape a half inch from the bottom. Add water to the julep cup, insert the flowers, and enjoy!
TIP: If you are using an engraved cup, arrange the place card so it does not cover up the engraving. Also, another way to add the place card, in lieu of tape, is to cut a length of ribbon, punch a hole in the place card, and tie the ribbon around the mint julep cup. Use brightly colored ribbon and cardstock for a look that really gets noticed!
