Party Ideas to Commemorate Memorial Day

Lami Eyer
Memorial Day is celebrated to honor the men and women who laid down their lives for the country during military service. It is the best time to honor veterans in your family and community. A Memorial Day party is a good way to pay our tributes to the departed souls and pass on the values of patriotism to the youth and children in the family.

It is a federal holiday and gives friends and families the opportunity to spend quality time together. You may choose to party indoors of have a picnic or barbecue to enjoy the day with your loved ones. But keeping with the spirit of the occasion, have events that remind people of the sacrifices of the veterans and express your gratitude to them. Here are few ideas you can use.

- Set up a fund collection drive to support veterans in your Memorial Day party. Your guests will be delighted to contribute towards the good cause. You can use the funds to support handicapped veterans or to provide for their families. Many charitable organizations accept donations specifically for veterans.
- Have educational games or story-telling to engage children and get them interested in knowing more about the country.
- Have children and youth to prepare a talk or a slide-show on the life of some veterans.
- If you have teens in your family, encourage them to prepare a skit show casing the life and sacrifices of veterans.
- Make a mass prayer in their honor in your Memorial Day party.
- Invite veterans in your community to present a talk to your family and guests about life in the military. This can be very inspiring.
- Set up competitions with patriotic themes where each player must come up with ways to protect the country. Encourage people of all ages to participate.
- To keep people interested, have a quiz at the end and give away prizes! You can get your kids involved by asking them to prepare the questions for the quiz. You may also form groups and have them compete against each other in the quiz.

Do not make your Memorial Day party a lecture on history or civics. Let people find their inspiration and love for the country within their hearts. And let children learn at their own pace. Intersperse your activities with other fun games and serve good food and drinks. If partying outdoors, schedule some sports activities. Give your guests memorabilia to take back so they can always remember your Memorial Day party and the lessons they learned from it. Have pictures taken and enjoy the day!
