Pa's Story Telling Time

David Lanier
Most every night when the kids are ready for bed,
and each one of their prayers have been said,
they shout for Pa until it almost raises the hair on his head,
to tell them tales of indians or grizzly bear.
Or the big bald eagle
with claws that hold a baby lamb in its flight,
and big bad wolves on moon lit nights,
that roam the mountains high.
When Pa tells these tales,
he is supposed to imitate everything,
even to howling winter gales,
and show the way the indians paddled their canoes,
and shoot their arrows into the moose.
If into the story comes a bear,
Pa's supposed to be on all fours sniffin' the air,
and show the way he climbs a tree,

to steal the honey from the bees.
Then Pa is supposed to buzz and sting,
and really raise cain with everything.
Pa starts to howl in pain,

until Ma comes racing in and says,
"For heavens sake, can't you please shut up,
they'll never sleep this night.
The racket you make could raise the dead,
you're supposed to get them to sleep instead."
When Ma goes out and shuts the door,

the kids whisper, "gee Pa, please just one more."
All those stories everynight they ask,
is really one heck of a task.
All those many things Pa has to be,
a bear that growls, and bees that sting,
a coyote stealing hens,
by golly it gets Pa down.
Just last night, they really stumped Pa cold.
They wanted Pa to show them how,
an angle worm twists and turns,
when turned up by the plow.
But, at long last, they are off to sleep,
as quickly and silently from the room Pa creeps,
and tries to clean himself up before he can sleep.
But, by then Pa can't sleep,
he rolls and tosses instead,
until Ma says he is just as big a kid as they.
But, you can bet your bottom dollar,
Pa will never resign his story tellin' time,
until he's dead and buried.

I tell my younger son a story every night. Last night, it was about a talking pillow who thought it was a bowl of jello. I don't do those noises though.
