Pasadena Day Trips

Rebecca White-Glanders
For those on the coast looking for something to do, Pasadena, California is definitely on the short list of attractions. However, in the current economy many families don't have enough to make a week-long excursion to LA's north side. Still, if you're looking for some day-to-day activities or some recreational family fun, check out these five day trip ideas.

The Pasadena Ice Skating Center

310 E. Green St

Pasadena, CA 91101

A former grand ballroom now serves as the meeting place for skaters all over Los Angeles. Come for the thrill of skating year-round, and then step outside and explore the many restaurants and stores right across the street from the plaza. One word of warning- the parking is steep, so plan accordingly. Skating equipment can be rented for a nominal fee. For more information, lessons and times contact the Pasadena Ice Skating Center at (626) 578-0801.

The Kidspace Children's Museum

480 N. Arroyo Blvd.
Pasadena, CA 91103

Want to know a secret? Children's Museums are really fun, even for adults. Kidspace is no different, sporting numerous exhibits on nature, the environment, science and imagination. One major selling point for children is the 40-foot climbable raindrop, while others like the giant splash tables located outside. The museum usually has some pretty decent seasonal activities, too. The cost is about average ($8.00 at the time of this writing), and there's something for everyone. If your child is too little to roam, check out their toddlers area. For more info, contact the Kidspace Children's Museum at (626) 449-9144.

Wrigley Gardens

391 South Orange Grove Boulevard

Pasadena, CA 91184

For the quieter visitors who want an afternoon away, Wrigley Gardens is highly recommended. A scenic and tranquil flower garden near the cities west side, Wrigley Gardens plays host to the Tournament of Roses each year (undoubtedly due to the nearby Rose Bowl Stadium). For lovers of horticulture, this is a must.

The Rose Bowl Stadium

Linda Vista Ave

Pasadena, CA

If you love football, the Rose Bowl Stadium will hold a special place for you on your day trip schedule. Home to five Super Bowls, two Olympics, the UCLA Bruins college football team and the biggest college football game in the world, the Rose Bowl is constantly the site of community activities, contests, concerts and events. Come for any number of exciting activities or just come to tour the facility. If the rest of the family is looking for greener pastures, visit the Rose Bowl's adjacent world-famous golf course. Either way, don't miss the piece of football lore.

The Gamble House

4 Westmoreland Place

Pasadena, CA 91103

A fantastic little museum, the Gamble House hosts works from American, European and Asian contributing artists. Oils, sculpture and more fill the small museum's halls and surrounding area. Don't be put off by it's location (it's near the freeway), this place is absolutely packed with one-of-a-kind works, many of which are originals. If you have an afternoon and a desire for fine art, the Gamble House is the way to go. For information on upcoming exhibits and shows, contact the Gamble House at (626) 793-3334.
