Passive Savings: Saving Money Without Even Knowing It!

Thundercats
So your discipline is slipping? Feel that not everyone is on board anymore? As humans, it is easy to get greedy and try to live the good life even if we don't have the money to spare. Here are some tips on how to keep your family on track and money in your savings without you even knowing it!

Loose Change Jar

Money is money, so why should coins be any different? Over time, quarters and nickels add up to quite a bit of money, money that could be growing interest somewhere safe. Make gathering change like a game, and get your whole family involved with something that can be entertaining as well as fun.

Round out loose ends

If you just got your paycheck and it isn't an even number (which it most likely won't be), you can make an effort subconsciously to add to your savings by rounding out that extra $4.30 or whatever it may be and put it into your savings. Doing this allows you allocate the exact amount into your checking account to pay your bills ,while slowly accumulating small amounts of money in your savings.

Use Coupons

Some people loving cutting coupons, and why not? If you are trying to save money and keep a budget, cutting coupons can not only be fun, it can be a great way to save extra money here and there. It's much more fun that keeping your eyes glued to the television, and more productive as well.

Watch a Movie at Home

Going to the movies can be great fun for the whole family, but if you want to save the $40 you will probably spend buying tickets for the whole family, watching a movie at home is also great. You can do whatever you like in the comforts of your own home, and you even save the gas money! Is it really worth it to pay extra money for a movie that will probably be available for rent in the next couple of weeks?

Borrow your books, not buy them

Libraries are a great source of books that can be borrowed and read at not cost at all, so why buy a book that you will probably leave in a corner and let gather dust? Also, if you have any books lying around that you don't need you can sell them used to a local bookstore. Libraries are also a good source of movies or magazines. You can save a ton of money on magazine subscriptions or movie rentals if you just go to the library to rent them.

Make your Own Coffee

If you are one of those people who needs his or her morning caffeine, realize that the extra $3-$5 you are spending can add up really quickly. If you drink one a day each day of the year, you will have spent almost $2000! Instead of buying if every morning, brew your own coffee as you get ready for work. You can buy a pack at your local grocery store and watch the extra change add up in your savings!

Get your Family/Friends Together

Want to have some fun but don't know how? Not only can you split whatever costs that will be incurred among your friends, you will have much more constructive fun with people rather than sitting in front of the television. Socializing is one of the best ways to have fun, as everyone can find something to be occupied with, and with more people, less cost!

Turn your Hobby Around

Your hobby doesn't just have to be a hobby. People who have hobbies can turn them into a little extra cash without even knowing it. For example, if you really enjoy fixing cars, you can spend some of your time on weekends to fix some cars for extra money. You won't even feel like you spent any effort in doing it because you had so much fun. The same thing goes for something like carpentry. If you really enjoy something, use some creative brainstorming to create something that can be profitable.

Cook your meals

Cooking can be great fun, especially if you do it with your family. Organizing a menu, buying ingredients, and cooking a great tasting meal can do wonders for your confidence as well as your wallet. Remember, you save gas money as well!

Whatever way you decide to save, make sure that you make it interesting and fun. No matter the amount, savings will tend to add up quickly if you don't pay too much attention to it (pay the right kind of attention). Remember to keep set your goals, whether it be for your child's college tuition or for your retirement. You will need some sort of discipline to keep a savings routine going, but who says it has to take lots of effort? If you feel yourself slipping and indulging a bit too much, take a step back and reevaluate if you are spending money in places you really need to be.

Every bit helps. Automatic savings plans, dollar-cost averaging, is what I trust to pay off in the long run. In fact, if this economic downturn isn't too long...I think that it could turn out to be profitable over time. Of course, that means a person has to find funds to save and decide whether to invest or put it in a relatively safe but low-interest account.
