Pat Robertson to Devastated Haiti: You Asked for It!

Alicia White
According to Christian televangelist, and famed hate-monger Pat Robertson, the 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti was caused by a pact with the devil in the 1800s, leaving the tiny nation "cursed". This, coming from the same man who once said God was punishing Americans in the South with hurricane Katrina.

Wednesday, on his radio show, The 700 Club host went on to say, "They were under the heel of the French, you know, Napoleon III and whatever, and they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, 'We will serve you if you will get us free from the prince,' so the devil said, 'Okay, it's a deal,' and they kicked the French out. But ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after another."

Pat Robertson is famous for being a right-wing Christian rabble rouser. This isn't the first time Robertson has spouted out extremist opinions on important happenings. Just two days after the attacks on 9/11, Robertson agreed with fellow evangelist Jerry Falwell's opinion that 9/11 was God's punishment for America's "moral decay". Hurricane Katrina was also a punishment of God in Robertson's eyes. He partially blamed hurricane Katrina on God's anger towards the increasing number of abortions.

In 2006, Robertson claimed Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's stroke was caused by his attempts to make peace with the Palestinians, that he was being punished for dividing the holy land. In 2007, God "spoke" to Robertson and warned him of an impending bomb that was to hit the United States. When no such bomb materialized, Robertson said it was thwarted by prayers of the masses.

In 1992, Robertson said the feminist movement was turning women into baby killers, lesbians, and witches.

Pat Robertson epitomizes the poison, hatred, and irrationality that come with religious extremism. How, in this day and age, is a hateful man like Robertson tolerated? Does his hate make for good TV ratings? Are there still people in the US whose Christian beliefs give birth to hypocritical hatred? The answer for both questions is a resounding yes.

Christians and non-Christians alike are offended by Robertson's recent comments, if not outright disgusted by his insensitive explanation for the death and destruction in Haiti. The last thing the good people of Haiti need to hear in their time of grieving is how they are a country of devil worshipers, getting exactly what they asked for.

Where do you think Pat Robertson's place is in US Media? Should he be praised for speaking out about traditional Christian values? Or should he be removed from the airways in order to promote less hatred? Do you believe the Haitians' pact with the Devil is the cause of the recent earthquake and loss of lives?

NO not all Christians share his view.. I am ashamed that someone who considers himself a Christian could say something like this..they need our help.. quit giving your opinions and go and show God's love and help find survivors. Go there and live among them and hold them while they grieve.. if you can't do that then please close your mouth!
