Patient in an Open-Backed Hospital Gown: A Funny Halloween Costume

Shelia West
It's Halloween again, and you're invited to a yearly costume party. You want to have the best costume there. Of course, everyone there wants to have the best costume. You could do the easy thing and go to a costume rental store and pick something out. The only problem with that is there usually ends up being two or three people in the same costume. You want something original. Something different. But what?

Here's an idea that's not only easy to make; it's fun. No, actually, it's hilarious. The idea of the costume is to be a hospital patient wearing one of those terrible hospital gowns that ties in the back. Simple so far, right? But of course, what does everyone wearing those gowns worry about? Showing their butts, that's what. We all have seen people walking down the hall of the hospital, clutching an IV pole in one hand and holding the back of their gown together with the other. And unfortunately, we always seem to get a peek at what we really don't want to see.

So now you have the general idea of the costume. You will need a hospital gown, of course. That's the easy part. The interesting part is coming up with the exposure part. For this you will need to get some flesh colored underwear. You may have to search a little to get this. If you can't find flesh colored underwear, look for a flesh colored girdle. The important thing to remember is to buy it extra, extra big. Because you are going to pad it. This will be the buttocks of the costume. You will want to pad it pretty heavy, so that they are definitely seen in the open back of the gown.

One of the other accessories needed for the hospital patient are a pair of floppy or furry house shoes. Since Halloween is in October, if the party is an indoor/outdoor event, the slippers will be a warm and welcome addition. Not only that, they are extremely comfortable. Just think, when everyone else is shedding their high heels for their stocking feet, yours will be nice and comfy and warm.

Another excellent accessory is a hair net or even better, a shower cap. If you have long hair, I would advise using a bushy type wig and pulling the cap over it. If you have short hair, you may be able to tease it and get it to stick out. Gray hair seems to be the most believable for this type of costume.

An IV pole is a super accessory if you can fix one up. A pretty simple solution is to borrow one if you can. If not, you can make one. It might not be perfect, but people will get the idea. The bottom part of a roll type desk chair makes a great bottom for the IV pole. Add a piece of pipe with hangers on it for the IV bag and try to find the IV bag.

Last, every patient still wants to look good, even if they are showing their butt when they walk, so don't forget the bright red lipstick and red nail polish.

If you have a spouse or partner who wants to match your costume, or "go with you", then a great idea for them would be to be a doctor or a nurse. Scrubs are easy to come by. Add a fake stethoscope and a hat, with rubber covers over their tennis shoes and they're all set. Or they could dress up in the sexy nurse's outfit if they don't want the scrub look. Either way, they will go along perfectly with the hospital patient strolling along, exposure their rear to all the world, while pushing the IV pole.

This costume is really easy and brings a lot of laughs.
