He came to emerald shores a slave and finally escaped to freedom.
Safe from Gaelic masters he could have stayed.
Yet something called him back to the place of his servitude.
Deep in his heart he heard the voice that sent him back to a pagan land.
Was it a single voice or many, calling Patrick back to Eire?
Was it the former masters or the Master beckoning him?
We only know he answered the plea he felt and heard.
Returned to Ireland to minister to those who once bound him.
When listing heroes of the faith, his name will always rise.
He will be named as one who served his God with all his heart.
Shamrock or not, he taught the Word and shared God's love to those
Who had not heard. He spent his life in service to a different master.
His legacy carries more than a love of Ireland and its people.
It tells of forgiveness and an open heart, reaching to those who oppressed.
He cared, and through his caring became the stuff of legend.
Not born there, yet more Irish of heart than many who were.
