Patriotic Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas

Elena dal Friuli
For the patriotic soul every day is a good day to display love for the country. Christmas, when the Greatest Gift of Love was born, is a great time to show others of such love. Following, are some ideas on how to decorate the Christmas tree with patriotic motifs to share with family members and visitors alike.

You can choose to decorate your tree under one theme, or you can choose to mix and match to give variety to your Christmas tree.

Flag decorations

Each country has a national flag and most flags have undergone changes through the years. For your Christmas tree, you can choose to decorate with several small current flags, or with several of the different designs changes the flag has undergone during its lifetime.

If you cannot find small flags to purchase (check on Oriental Trading ), you can print them on card stock paper; attach them to wooden skewers which you will then secure to the tree, or thread them with thin ribbon or fishing line to hang them on the branches.

Use ribbons of the colors of the flag to create streamers draping the tree from the top.

If you wish, you can add a few Christmas balls of the colors representing your flag.

For your tree top, use one of the larger flags or create a bow with the ribbons and add to it a couple of small flags and you will have a Christmas tree reminding you of the love you feel for your country.

Christmas Balls

The more traditional way is to use Christmas balls to decorate the tree. To give it a patriotic spin, use only glass or plastic balls that are in the colors of the country's flag.

Use tinsel to match and for the tree top, use a small flag.

If you like crafts, you can add clear Christmas balls with the flag inside: print on thin paper several flags; cut in round shape the diameter of the ball; roll the cut shape small enough to fit through the opening of the ball; position the flag; replace the cap and hang on the tree. You can add these to the colored ones already on the tree, or you can use them on their own.

Your tree top can be a flag or a ribbon displaying the colors of the flag.

Landmark decorations

Each country has landmarks that are famous and highly recognizable (Eiffel Tower for France; Coliseum for Italy; Big Ben for England; Empire State Building for the U.S.A. just to name a few).

If you have the finances, I am sure you can find ready made trinkets and ornaments to use for your Christmas tree decorations.

However, if you prefer to make your own or you are on a budget, you can print out several of your country's landmarks on card stock paper, cut them out, thread them with ribbon or fishing line and hang them on the tree.

If you had the pleasure to visit any of the landmarks and took pictures while there, you may want to make copies of those pictures and use them (cutting the silhouette) along with the others for decoration.

Complete the tree with Christmas balls and ribbons or tinsel in the color of the flag.

Armed Forces Decorations

If you belong to any of the armed forces branches, or you just want to honor them, you can choose to decorate the tree by concentrating on one of the military divisions (air force, navy, army, etc.) or by displaying all of them.

Use small airplanes, ships, or armored vehicles models along with flags to decorate the tree.

Again, if you budget is tight, you can print several pictures on card stock paper and use them as decorations, once cut out and attached to ribbon or fishing line.

Patriotism is something to live every day of the year, but you can emphasize your love for your country during the Christmas holidays by decorating your tree using a patriotic motif.
