Patriotic Crafts for Kids: American Flag Crafts

Jolynne M Hudnell
Kids love crafts and the holidays can be the perfect time to let your kids get creative. An Independence Day theme is the American flag. Here are a few ideas for patriotic crafts for kids, American flag crafts.

Craft Stick American Flag Craft

Supplies . You will need ten craft sticks, red, white and blue poster paints, craft glue, and little star stickers (or you may use white paint to make stars).

Instructions . Paint the the appropriate number of sticks with each color: you will need four red sticks, three white sticks and two blue craft sticks. One craft stick will be left unpainted. Allow paint to dry thoroughly on one side before painting the other side, then allow to dry completely before assembling American flag.

-With red on the top and bottom of the "flag", glue the red and white sticks across the center of the unpainted stick to make alternating red and white stripes.

-Carefully cut or break the blue sticks in half, then glue the four halves to the top left corner of the flag.

-Use star stickers or white paint to make stars on the blue craft sticks. Now you have a craft stick American flag craft.

Paper Chain American Flag Craft

Instead of making a paper chain, you will take the "links" and glue them onto a piece of cardboard or foam board to make an American flag. Use construction paper to make red and white "links" for the stripes and blue and white for the background and "stars". Glue the links to the board on one of the flat parts and line them up next to each other in an up and down angle. You will have a paper chain American flag.

American Flag Paper Fan Craft

Print out and let your child color a picture of the American flag. Your child can use crayons, markers, pencils, paint, etc. to color in the flag. You can find a flag to print and color online (http://www.coloringcastle.com/american_flag_coloring_pages.html).

Fold the paper accordion-style. Tape the lower one inch while the paper if folded. Then spread the fan out gently so as not to remove the "pleats" and your American flag paper fan craft is finished.
